it can implement an age and consent verification system for those depicted in the images and videos amid alarming concerns over the internet\u2019s child sexual exploitation epidemic.<\/p>\n<p>Officials from the National Center on Sexual Exploitation (NCOSE) told The Daily Wire that since Musk laid off most of Twitter\u2019s Trust and Safety Team and further disbanded its Advisory Council, the alleged skeleton staff could lead the platform to even more dangerous grounds to confront its child sexual abuse material (CSAM) problem.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTwitter allows pornography, one of the few social media platforms to do so, which enables child sexual abuse material, sex trafficking, image-based sexual abuse to thrive,\u201d Lina Nealon, director of corporate and strategic initiatives for the center, told The Daily Wire in an email.<\/p>\n<p>Rampant Internet porn has been a long-standing issue, which in many cases involves victims of all ages depicted in such content without their consent and further causing irreparable harm to their lives.<\/p>\n<p>The New York Times <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/interactive\/2019\/09\/28\/us\/child-sex-abuse.html?mtrref=undefined&#038;assetType=PAYWALL\">published<\/a> an investigation in 2019 that showed over the course of a decade, the proliferation of child sexual abuse material on the Internet increased from 600,000 images reported to NCMEC in 2008 to 60 million in 2018 \u2014 some just 3 or 4 years old that were sexually abused and, in some cases, tortured.<\/p>\n<p>Nealon added, \u201cbecause Twitter requires no meaningful age or consent verification of those posting or selling pornography on its platform, it\u2019s impossible to know if the sexually graphic images on the platform are consensual or of adults, not children.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The center added Twitter to its <a href=\"https:\/\/endsexualexploitation.org\/Twitter\/\">2022 Dirty Dozen List<\/a> of mainstream contributors to sexual exploitation, which has prompted it to partner with The Haba Law Firm to represent two survivors of child sexual abuse who were trafficked and exploited on Twitter in a <a href=\"https:\/\/endsexualexploitation.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/Doe-v-Twitter_1stAmndComplaint_Filed_040721.pdf\">lawsuit<\/a> against the company.<\/p>\n<p>Last week, CNN <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2022\/12\/12\/tech\/twitter-disbands-trust-and-safety-council\/index.html#:~:text=check%20back%20later.-,Twitter%20disbands%20its%20&#039;Trust%20and%20Safety%20Council&#039;%20that,tackled%20harassment%20and%20child%20exploitation&#038;text=Twitter%20announced%20late%20Monday%20that,that%20was%20obtained%20by%20CNN.\">reported<\/a> the outlet obtained an email sent to Twitter\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20221210013456\/https:\/about.twitter.com\/en\/our-priorities\/healthy-conversations\/trust-and-safety-council\">Trust and Safety Council<\/a>, which included about 100 organizations that advised the platform on issues including online safety, human and digital rights, suicide prevention, mental health, child sexual exploitation, and dehumanization.<\/p>\n<p>The email reportedly said the company decided to dissolve the advisory council to reevaluate \u201chow best to bring external insights into our product and policy development work,\u201d which the platform deemed the council was \u201cnot the best structure to do this.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Associated Press further <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/elon-musk-twitter-inc-technology-business-a9b795e8050de12319b82b5dd7118cd7\">reported<\/a> the email, which was signed by \u201cTwitter,\u201d said the company would be \u201cmoving faster and more aggressively than ever before\u201d to \u201cmake Twitter a safe, informative place.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Twitter staff also said the former council members could still contribute ideas in the future to achieve their goal.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">A spokesperson from the National Center for Missing &#038; Exploited Children (NCMEC), which the U.S. government tasked to track reports of child sexual abuse material online and served on the Twitter Advisory Council group, told <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/tech\/tech-news\/elon-musk-says-can-stop-child-exploitation-twitter-far-s-axed-jobs-pus-rcna61233\">NBC News<\/a> that little has changed under Musk\u2019s leadership referring to the organization\u2019s centralized CSAM reporting system.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">\u201cDespite the rhetoric and some of what we\u2019ve seen people posting online, their CyberTipline numbers are almost identical to what they were prior to Musk coming on board,\u201d Gavin Portnoy, an NCMEC representative, told the outlet.<\/p>\n<p>Last year, 86,666 CSAM <a href=\"https:\/\/www.missingkids.org\/content\/dam\/missingkids\/pdfs\/2021-reports-by-esp.pdf\">reports<\/a> on Twitter alone were made to NCMEC, which plays a key role after Internet sites \u2014 like Twitter \u2014 remove the material. When child sexual exploitation material is detected and removed, the report goes to the center, which contacts law enforcement for further action.<\/p>\n<p>In 2021, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.missingkids.org\/gethelpnow\/cybertipline\/cybertiplinedata\">NCMEC\u2019s<\/a> CyberTipline received 29.3 million reports of suspected child sexual exploitation material, which estimates to be an increase of 35% from 2020.<\/p>\n<p>Musk, who has made sweeping changes within his newly purchased $44 billion company, recently <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/priority-1-elon-musk-to-address-twitters-child-sexual-exploitation-problem\">said<\/a> he would make addressing its alleged child sexual exploitation problem the platform\u2019s number one priority.<\/p>\n<p>Ella Irwin, the platform\u2019s new head of Trust &#038; Safety, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/10-million-views-of-child-sexual-exploitation-material-allegedly-watched-on-old-twitter-report\">said<\/a> on Twitter earlier this month that when she joined the company last June she saw \u201czero engineers and very few employees\u201d working on child sexual abuse material at one point.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI was shocked to find that there were such gaping holes in some of these really critical areas like, for example, child safety,\u201d Irwin said during a December 10 <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/elizableu\/status\/1601415097833996289?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw%7Ctwcamp%5Etweetembed%7Ctwterm%5E1601415097833996289%7Ctwgr%5Ede8e5317614591edb622ca9a01e18d130d4595c3%7Ctwcon%5Es1_&#038;ref_url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.dailywire.com%2Fnews%2F10-million-views-of-child-sexual-exploitation-material-allegedly-watched-on-old-twitter-report\">Twitter Space<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Irwin claimed the company had slashed its child safety team \u201ca long time ago\u201d and that her team would actually add more people to solve the problem under the new leadership.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019ve already started, actually, but we\u2019re going to be adding people to the team and increasing the number of people,\u201d Irwin said. \u201cWe will have more people working on child safety than we\u2019ve ever had before \u2014 at least this year that I can speak to that I\u2019ve seen.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Andrea Stroppa, founder of independent cybersecurity group Ghost Data, has been working alongside top officials at Twitter and found some accounts posting content that allegedly sexually exploited<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Twitter watchdogs are calling on Elon Musk to ban pornography on the platform until it can implement an age and consent verification system for those depicted in the images and videos amid alarming concerns over the internet\u2019s child sexual exploitation epidemic.
