Bankman-Fried had already seen an affidavit listing the charges, attorney Jerone Roberts told a magistrate judge in the Bahamas during a two-hour hearing, according to a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/legal\/ftxs-bankman-fried-appear-bahamas-court-expected-waive-extradition-2022-12-19\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">report<\/a> from Reuters.<\/p>\n<p>Bankman-Fried was dressed in a dark blue jacket and untucked white shirt, speaking only to greet the judge and confirm he wanted to speak with his attorneys in the United States, according to the outlet, which added that he at one point leaned backward with his eyes closed and was awakened by a court official.<\/p>\n<p>The former multibillionaire was returned to Fox Hill Prison, the small island nation\u2019s only government detention center, after the hearing. According to a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.state.gov\/reports\/2021-country-reports-on-human-rights-practices\/bahamas\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">report<\/a> from the State Department, the facility is harsh due to \u201covercrowding, poor nutrition, inadequate sanitation, and inadequate medical care,\u201d while some cells were infested with \u201crats, maggots, and insects.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Bankman-Fried, who has been denied bail due to the significant flight risk he poses, could <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/criminal-charges-against-democrat-megadonor-sam-bankman-fried-unsealed-faces-life-in-prison-denied-bail\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">spend<\/a> as much as 115 years behind bars in the United States if convicted on all counts.<\/p>\n<p>Current FTX CEO John Ray, an attorney who previously managed the collapse of fraudulent energy company Enron, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/attorney-overseeing-ftx-bankruptcy-testifies-before-congress-grossly-inexperienced-people-ran-company-went-on-5-billion-spending-binge\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">told<\/a> members of the House Financial Services Committee last week during a hearing that he is working to \u201cmitigate, to the greatest extent possible, the harm suffered\u201d by former customers and investors. He repeated earlier assertions that FTX was the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/lawyer-overseeing-ftx-fallout-never-in-my-career-have-i-seen-such-a-complete-failure\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">worst failure<\/a> of corporate controls he has witnessed in his entire career.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAlthough our investigation is ongoing and detailed findings will have to await its conclusion, the FTX Group\u2019s collapse appears to stem from the absolute concentration of control in the hands of a very small group of grossly inexperienced and unsophisticated individuals who failed to implement virtually any of the systems or controls that are necessary for a company that is entrusted with other people\u2019s money or assets,\u201d he told lawmakers.<\/p>\n<p>Joseph Bankman and Barbara Fried, the parents of Bankman-Fried, have reportedly been <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/sam-bankman-frieds-well-connected-democrat-parents-hiding-out-in-bahamas-with-him\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">staying with their son<\/a> in the Bahamas. After Ray was asked whether the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/mother-of-disgraced-crypto-billionaire-sam-bankman-fried-is-a-democratic-fundraiser-who-once-wrote-essay-blasting-personal-responsibility\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">well-connected<\/a> Democratic couple was involved with the company\u2019s failure, he confirmed that his team is investigating the two Stanford Law School professors \u201cas well as any other players.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Should he have received the opportunity to testify before members of Congress, Bankman-Fried would have <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/sam-bankman-fried-would-have-told-congress-i-fed-up-draft-testimony-says\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">rejected<\/a> the claim that he had criminal intent, according to a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/stevenehrlich\/2022\/12\/13\/exclusive-transcript-the-full-testimony-sbf-planned-to-give-to-congress\/?sh=3c5d7f263c47\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">copy<\/a> of his draft testimony obtained by Forbes.
