By the end of the whole ordeal, which is likely much longer than <em>anyone<\/em> in line budgeted their time for, the letters and packages you left at the post office desk could still fail to arrive on time \u2014 if at all. <\/p>\n<p>The U.S. Postal Service\u2019s problems are not new, but they are especially prominent during the holiday season when postal workers know they will have to sort, transport, and deliver <a href=\"https:\/\/www.postalytics.com\/blog\/holiday-season-direct-mail-delivery\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">15 billion pieces of mail and 800 million packages<\/a> in less than two short months. <\/p>\n<p>You might be a post office pro who knows to grab the right box, use the right tape, and input all of your intended recipient\u2019s information correctly, but you\u2019ll still get the universal experience of waiting in a long line while a grumpy postal clerk, who doesn\u2019t care that it\u2019s the most wonderful time of the year, yells at the person in front of you. <\/p>\n<p>Do long lines, terribly unfriendly employees, and a system that never seems to work in your favor remind you of any other government agencies? Swap USPS for DMV, TSA, Social Security Administration, or any other bureaucratic outfit that requires in-person interaction and you get a recipe for frustration. <\/p>\n<p>Agencies like USPS continue to promise perks and delivery in rain or shine but those pledges are overshadowed by the agency\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.merchantmaverick.com\/usps-vs-ups-vs-fedex-which-shipping-carrier-is-best\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">limited tracking, poor customer support<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/federalnewsnetwork.com\/hiring-retention\/2022\/08\/postal-unions-demand-usps-ramp-up-hiring-to-address-understaffing\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">staffing<\/a> issues. Unless you\u2019re trying to <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2022\/08\/16\/u-s-postal-service-just-institutionalized-election-interference-with-new-mail-in-ballot-division\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">interfere in elections via the mass delivery of mail-in ballots<\/a>, USPS likely doesn\u2019t care if your mail is backlogged.<\/p>\n<p>Service by USPS is so bad that the office of the inspector general decided to launch a <a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20220830212438\/https:\/\/www.uspsoig.gov\/blog\/shedding-light-usps-service-performance\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">service performance webpage<\/a> dedicated to explaining all of the agency\u2019s national and regional failures. So far, that tracker hasn\u2019t helped USPS improve much.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s unclear how much mail USPS loses each year but estimates say it hovers around <a href=\"https:\/\/bobcutmag.com\/2022\/04\/06\/does-usps-lose-packages\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">3 percent<\/a>, or <strong>\u00a0<\/strong>4.38 billion pieces of mail.<\/p>\n<p>Despite its iffy track record, USPS is guilty of wasting excesses of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.linns.com\/news\/postal-updates\/taxpayer-funds-come-to-the-u.s.-postal-service-s-rescue\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">taxpayer cash<\/a>. In the 2022 fiscal year, USPS lost <a href=\"https:\/\/about.usps.com\/what\/financials\/integrated-financial-plans\/fy2023.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">$4.4 billion<\/a> in net income. Before that, USPS recorded $4.9 billion in losses in <a href=\"https:\/\/about.usps.com\/newsroom\/national-releases\/2021\/1110-usps-reports-fiscal-year-2021-results.htm#:~:text=On%20a%20U.S.%20generally%20accepted,of%20%249.2%20billion%20for%202020.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">2021<\/a> and $9.2 billion in 2020. <\/p>\n<p>In typical government-agency fashion, after more than a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gao.gov\/blog\/u.s.-postal-services-financial-woes-and-some-actions-could-fix-it-video\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">decade of financial loss<\/a>, USPS still has the audacity to ask for $7.4 billion in capital commitments \u201cto modernize and improve our mail processing, transport, and delivery system.\u201d What financials USPS doesn\u2019t get allocated the agency hopes to gain by jacking up prices for taxpayers.<\/p>\n<p>\u201c[P]rice increases will more than compensate for the revenue lost due to reduced volume,\u201d USPS confidently <a href=\"https:\/\/about.usps.com\/what\/financials\/integrated-financial-plans\/fy2023.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">stated<\/a> in its 2023 Integrated Financial Plan. <\/p>\n<p>As with most government agencies, what USPS was created for and is paid to do, private companies FedEx and UPS <a href=\"https:\/\/fitsmallbusiness.com\/fedex-vs-ups-vs-usps\/#:~:text=While%20USPS%20has%20some%20of,for%20most%20low%2Dvolume%20businesses.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">tend to do faster<\/a> with fewer hiccups. <\/p>\n<p>This isn\u2019t just a Christmas problem.
