The FBI Was the Hand in Twitter\u2019s Glove <\/p>\n<p>\u201cTwitter\u2019s contact with the FBI was constant and pervasive, as if it were a subsidiary of the FBI,\u201d Taibbi opened his \u201cTwitter Files\u201d thread from Friday. Then over the course of some 45 tweets, Taibbi provided proof from internal communications of the tech giant to support his claim and what Taibbi dubbed both the \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/mtaibbi\/status\/1603857573219819529\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">master<\/a>-canine quality of the FBI\u2019s relationship to Twitter\u201d and a \u201cunique one-<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/mtaibbi\/status\/1603857637988339712\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">big-happy-family vibe<\/a>\u201d between Twitter and the FBI.<\/p>\n<p>For instance, the \u201cTwitter Files\u201d revealed that from \u201cJanuary 2020 to November 2022, there were over 150 emails between the FBI and former Twitter Trust and Safety Chief Yoel Roth.\u201d And the emails and other communications <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/mtaibbi\/status\/1603857557080231936https:\/twitter.com\/mtaibbi\/status\/1603857557080231936\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">showed<\/a> \u201cagencies like the FBI and DHS regularly sending social media content to Twitter through multiple entry points, pre-flagged for moderation.\u201d \u201cWhat stands out,\u201d Taibbi <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/mtaibbi\/status\/1603857563858132997\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">stressed<\/a>, \u201cis the sheer quantity of reports from the government.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Twitter\u2019s relationship was not limited to the FBI and the Department of Homeland Security, nor were communications limited to emails, Friday\u2019s installment of the \u201cTwitter Files\u201d revealed. A Sept. 15, 2020 email from a then-legal executive at Twitter, Stacia Cardille, to Jim Baker, who served at the time as deputy general counsel, confirmed these points. The email, titled \u201cElections Work,\u201d summarized Cardille\u2019s elections-related work and opened by discussing \u201cGovernment-Industry Sync.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI participated in our monthly (soon to be weekly) 90-minute meeting with FBI, DOJ, DHS, ODNI, and industry peers on election threats.\u201d Cardille then noted several items of import \u2014 more on those later. Key here, however, is the revelation that Twitter <em>and <\/em>\u201cindustry peers\u201d had monthly and \u201csoon to be weekly\u201d meetings with the \u201cFBI, DOJ, DHS, and ODNI,\u201d or Office of the Director of National Intelligence, showing Twitter was not the only tech company groomed by the feds to spy on and censor Americans, and that it wasn\u2019t merely the FBI involved.<\/p>\n<p>So maybe \u201chands-in-gloves\u201d is a more apt descriptor.<\/p>\n<p> 2. Bloated FBI Task Force Pushed for Silly Censorship <\/p>\n<p>While Cardille\u2019s email to Baker cast Twitter\u2019s relationship with the FBI and other federal organizations as related to \u201celection threats,\u201d the emails exchanged between the feds and Twitter reveal the government regularly pushed Twitter to target select accounts for posts far removed from any semblance of an election threat.
