Matt Rosendale (R-Mont.), Bob Good (R-Va.), Ralph Norman (R-S.C.), and Matt Gaetz (R-Fla.) have publicly signaled they would not vote for McCarthy. With Republicans having a slim majority in the House during the next Congress, it\u2019s not clear if McCarthy\u2014the incoming House majority leader\u2014has enough votes to become speaker.<\/p>\n<p>During an appearance on Hugh Hewitt\u2019s radio show on Friday, McCarthy <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/house\/kevin-mccarthy-hugh-hewitt-gop-opposition-speaker-bid\">said<\/a> that he has been communicating with the five aforementioned lawmakers, \u201cbut they have not moved.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd the difficulty here is that, you know, we are the only Republican entity stopping the Biden administration, but we\u2019re also going to be the only ones that can move forward,\u201d the California Republican told the show. \u201cBut it would delay everything, getting committees up and running, being able to do the things that you know we need to get done from the very beginning.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>McCarthy agreed with a comment that the five defections hamper Republicans\u2019 ability for the party to accomplish its legislative goals.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s not only delaying that. It\u2019s being prepared to not only defend the majority but grow the majority. You want to take advantage of having the majority,\u201d McCarthy said on the show Friday. \u201cRemember, this is a presidential year, so you only have so many months to really get out there and govern. And you want to hit the ground running. Every day you lose, if you lose a quarter, you don\u2019t start strong.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A longtime member of the Republican House leadership, McCarthy has never been elected House speaker. In 2015, he was in the running to replace then-House Speaker John Boehner (R-Ohio) but dropped out before former Rep. Paul Ryan (R-Wis.) succeeded him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo you don\u2019t get new, stronger candidates. You don\u2019t get more resources to be able to supply those candidates to get the message out. And people look at us and believe, are you ready to be the majority if this is what\u2019s happening?\u201d he added. \u201cHow can you pass the big bills? How can you change the course of history? How can you secure the border? How can you become energy independent? How can you get passed the parents\u2019 bill of rights? (Drew Angerer\/Getty Images)<\/figure>\n<p>However, toward the end of the interview Friday, McCarthy signaled that he believes he will be elected House speaker.<\/p>\n<h2>Trump Endorsement<\/h2>\n<p>Over the weekend, Trump announced he\u2019s endorsing McCarthy in his House speaker bid and said the five detractors should give it up.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLook, I think this: Kevin has worked very hard,\u201d Trump <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theepochtimes.com\/mkt_app\/trump-endorses-mccarthy-for-house-speaker-says-opponents-should-give-up_4930271.html\">told<\/a> Breitbart, adding, \u201cI support McCarthy.\u201d \u201cHe is just\u2014it\u2019s been exhausting. If you think, he\u2019s been all over. I think he deserves the shot. Hopefully, he\u2019s going to be very strong and going to be very good and he\u2019s going to do what everybody wants.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Some of the GOP lawmakers who oppose McCarthy indicated that he doesn\u2019t have the leadership ability in the face of Democrat gains.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRep. Norman sincerely likes Rep. McCarthy on a personal level,\u201d a spokesman for Norman told The Epoch Times last week. \u201cHowever, Rep. Norman is extremely concerned with the direction of this country, particularly with respect to the federal government\u2019s out-of-control spending and outrageous national debt.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>More than a week ago, Biggs <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theepochtimes.com\/republican-launches-challenge-to-kevin-mccarthys-house-speaker-bid_4907068.html\">wrote<\/a> that he is launching a bid to become House speaker. In an opinion article, the Arizona congressman said that he believes McCarthy is an \u201cestablishment\u201d figure.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe purpose of the establishment is not to better the lives of Americans, the purpose is to gain and keep power. If anyone besides the establishment class experiences positive effects from the rule of the establishment, it is merely serendipitous,\u201d Biggs continued.<\/p>\n<p>But Trump stressed Saturday that he believes \u201cit\u2019s\u00a0a very dangerous game that\u2019s being played\u201d and \u201csome bad things could happen\u201d if McCarthy doesn\u2019t get elected. Other than the five public defectors, McCarthy appears to enjoy broad support among the GOP caucus.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m friendly with a lot of those people who are against Kevin,\u201d\u00a0Trump told Breitbart. \u201cI think almost every one of them are very much inclined toward Trump, and me toward them. But I have to tell them, and I have told them, you\u2019re playing a very dangerous game. You could end up with [a] worse situation.
