While leftwing media outlets have, for the most part, been silent about the growing presence of people who regret medical transition, Cuomo was determined to balance the conversation.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTheir voices need to be heard,\u201d said Cuomo. \u201cOne reason you likely don\u2019t know more is that we rarely discuss it. There\u2019s a fear, for some at least, that anything but unqualified acceptance of transgenderism would be considered \u2018hateful\u2019 by transgender community and its allies.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Cuomo began the program by introducing statistics from a recent UCLA study that estimates \u00a0300,000 youth ages 13-17 identify as transgender in the US, a number that has doubled in 5 years (while rates of adults have stayed the same).<\/p>\n<p>Cuomo said that pediatric medical transition was \u201crisky\u201d and \u201cimpactful,\u201d a marked departure from the usual rhetoric by mainstream media journalists who portray it as \u201ccompletely safe,\u201d \u201cfully reversible,\u201d and \u201clifesaving.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere are many who say treatment saved their lives, but not all,\u201d said Cuomo.\u200b\u200b \u201cThere are also doctors who are worried about what they\u2019re seeing, situations they\u2019ve had to stop or slow and young people who\u2019ve decided too late that transitioning was not right for them.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The former CNN host took a big step in acknowledging the mastectomies and genital surgeries being performed on minors, citing data from an October <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/new-insurance-data-reveals-shocking-number-of-minors-obtained-transgender-surgeries\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">investigation<\/a> by Reuters in collaboration with health technology company Komodo Health Inc. In an analysis of U.S. insurance claims and other medical records, Komodo found 776 mastectomies and 56 genital surgeries occurred among patients with a prior gender dysphoria diagnosis ages 13 to 17 from 2019 to 2021. Importantly, Reuters said their data were a \u201csignificant undercount\u201d because it only included insurance claims.<\/p>\n<p>The interviews, conducted by NewsNation correspondent Rich McHugh, took place over a six month investigation. McHugh said his interest was piqued when he came across Helena Kerschner\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/lacroicsz.substack.com\/p\/by-any-other-name?r=18ll6h&#038;utm_campaign=post&#038;utm_medium=web&#038;s=r\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">story<\/a> on Substack and was concerned by the amount of \u201cvitriol\u201d she received online from the transgender community \u2013 just for sharing her experience.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey have a right to speak, they need to be part of this conversation,\u201d said McHugh.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Dr. Laura Edwards-Leeper, the founding psychologist at the first pediatric gender clinic at Boston Children\u2019s Hospital and a \u201cworld leader in transgender health,\u201d said that \u201cgender-affirming\u201d care has been co-opted.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI do think that it has been hijacked,\u201d said Edwards-Leeper. \u201cPeople have changed the meaning behind it. Some providers consider \u2018gender-affirming\u2019 care to be a very fast moving process to get the child to medical intervention. The field has gone completely off the rails in many respects.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/transgender-psychologist-joins-lawsuit-against-maryland-school-district-for-hiding-social-transition-from-parents\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Dr. Erica Anderson<\/a>, a clinical psychologist and the first transgender president of USPath and former board member of WPATH, believes that too many minors are not being properly evaluated before starting medical treatment. Anderson said that parents have been coming to her for several years with their concerns, describing scenarios of taking their children to a gender clinic and emerging with a transgender diagnosis 15-20 minutes later and placed on the pathway to hormones.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cToo often parents are told they can have a live child of a gender different than what you thought they were or a dead child of the gender you knew them to be,\u201d Anderson said. \u201cAnd to have that be used as a lever for someone to concede to treatment that may or may not be appropriate I think is unwise and borders on malfeasance.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A chief medical director of a children\u2019s health organization in the US spoke to NewsNation anonymously, out of fear of losing his job.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is really the most serious abandonment of scientific principles that I have seen in the medical profession,\u201d said the medical director, who appeared cast in shadow with his voice distorted.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cVery reasonable physicians have spoken their mind about this and lost their jobs, even tenure,\u201d the medical director continued. \u201cWhat is concerning here is that all reasonable dialogue has stopped.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019ve talked to over a dozen doctors and clinicians in reporting this story and they are terrified to speak out,\u201d said McHugh. Like the medical director who spoke to NewsNation anonymously, they\u2019re afraid they\u2019ll lose their jobs.<\/p>\n<p>Representing the position of \u201cgender-affirming\u201d care was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/pro-pediatric-gender-transition-doc-gets-slammed-by-medical-professionals-for-false-claims\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Dr. Meredithe McNamara<\/a>, an adolescent medicine specialist who treats \u201cgender-diverse youth\u201d age 11-25 at Yale School of Medicine.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOne thing I like to say is \u2018what does it cost you to affirm who they say they are?&#8217;\u201d said McNamara.<\/p>\n<p>For 18-year-old Chloe Cole \u2013 the cost was astronomical. \u201cThis was the biggest mistake of my life,\u201d said Cole. \u201cMy breasts are gone, permanently.
