Sixty-seven percent of those polled, meanwhile, rated the strength of the economy negatively, compared with 32 percent who rated it positively.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">The numbers come as Goldman Sachs on Friday <a href=\"https:\/\/freebeacon.com\/latest-news\/goldman-sachs-to-cut-thousands-of-employees-as-economy-sputters\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/freebeacon.com\/latest-news\/goldman-sachs-to-cut-thousands-of-employees-as-economy-sputters\/&#038;source=gmail&#038;ust=1671303916328000&#038;usg=AOvVaw3YFN6qEjSyMt_f4HH9Pgcw\">announced<\/a> it will lay off thousands of workers and U.S. banks <a href=\"https:\/\/freebeacon.com\/latest-news\/us-banks-warn-of-recession-as-inflation-takes-toll-on-consumers-stocks-plummet\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/freebeacon.com\/latest-news\/us-banks-warn-of-recession-as-inflation-takes-toll-on-consumers-stocks-plummet\/&#038;source=gmail&#038;ust=1671303916328000&#038;usg=AOvVaw1aLqmQ9HDoECnt7YcrHm20\">warn<\/a> of a looming recession.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">While Democrat respondents were optimistic about the economy, independents and Republicans were far more pessimistic, the <em>Wall Street Journal<\/em> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/articles\/americans-pessimistic-about-prospects-for-the-economy-in-2023-wsj-poll-finds-11671150300?mod=politics_lead_pos4\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/articles\/americans-pessimistic-about-prospects-for-the-economy-in-2023-wsj-poll-finds-11671150300?mod%3Dpolitics_lead_pos4&#038;source=gmail&#038;ust=1671303916328000&#038;usg=AOvVaw1Auj5q1R4fdIFQ094PoO4v\">reported<\/a>:<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><em>Economic pessimism is strongest among Republicans, with 83% expecting the economy to worsen. Slightly more than half of independents feel that way, while 22% of Democrats do.<\/em><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><em>&#8220;Our economic diagnostics have become partisan,&#8221; said Democratic pollster John Anzalone, who conducted the survey with Republican pollster Tony Fabrizio. &#8220;If there was a Republican president, we might see the reverse.&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><em>Mr. Fabrizio said Democrats aren\u2019t paying as much of a political price as one might expect for so many people having negative feelings about the economy. &#8220;You would normally see that translate into being bad news for the Democrats,&#8221; he said.<\/em><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">The Federal Reserve announced Wednesday that it\u2019s raising interest rates by 0.5 percent.
