The vast majority of people with early stage kidney disease\u2014<a rel=\"noopener noreferrer external\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/diabetes\/pubs\/pdf\/kidney_factsheet.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">96 percent<\/a>\u2014are unaware that they have CKD at all. An Oct. 2022 study published in the <em>New England Journal of Medicine<\/em> points out that this poses a serious problem, since this stage is &#8220;when therapies that prevent progression are most effective.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>In Stage 1 CKD, the kidneys still work well, but you may experience mild physical damage to the kidneys. Doctors can typically diagnose Stage 1 kidney disease based on simple urine and blood tests. These may include weight loss, fatigue, shortness of breath, insomnia, muscle cramps, swelling in the ankles, feet, or hands, itchy skin, nausea or vomiting, chest pain, and more.
