Currently, the newspaper employs around 2,500 people.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\">Today, we came into WaPo\u2019s so-called town hall with questions about recent layoffs and the future of the company.<\/p>\n<p>Our publisher dropped a bombshell on us by announcing more layoffs and then walking out, refusing to answer any of our questions. <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/ajNZsZKOBr\">pic.twitter.com\/ajNZsZKOBr<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Washington Post Guild (@PostGuild) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/PostGuild\/status\/1603142794612203521?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">December 14, 2022<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Ryan told staffers in an email that the Jeff Bezos-owned newspaper\u2019s plans to slash jobs \u201cin no way signals that we are scaling back our ambitions.\u201d But, he stressed,\u00a0\u201clike any business, The Post cannot keep investing resources in initiatives that do not meet our customers\u2019 needs.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=odFzZ6ZLm78&#038;embeds_euri=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.zerohedge.com%2F&#038;source_ve_path=MjM4NTE&#038;feature=emb_title\">video appeared to show<\/a> Ryan walking out of the town hall event as dozens of Washington Post employees asked him questions about the job cuts. The Post\u2019s report on the layoffs confirmed he walked out of the meeting.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat are you doing to protect people\u2019s jobs?\u201d asked one person. \u201cAre they going to be treated like the magazine staffers were?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ryan responded by saying that \u201cwe\u2019ll have more information as we move forward,\u201d adding: \u201cThank you very much.\u201d Ryan then walked out of the room as another staffer said that \u201cyou seem to be disrespecting this room\u201d before the clip was cut off, according to another video uploaded by the Washington Post Guild.<\/p>\n<p>The Guild\u2019s video gave another vantage point of the chaos, showing staffers yelling over each other while asking Ryan questions. \u201cThis is embarrassing,\u201d one woman exclaimed as Ryan left the room.<\/p>\n<p>During the meeting, Ryan cited the U.S. economic situation and noted that firms dependent on advertising, such as newspapers and websites, are suffering, according to the Post\u2019s report. Several other media outlets <a href=\"https:\/\/www.axios.com\/2022\/11\/22\/media-layoffs-cnn-disney-economy-jobs-advertising\">initiated layoffs<\/a> in recent weeks amid declining revenue from advertisements, inflation, and fears of a recession.<\/p>\n<p>Media and entertainment firms that recently started conducting layoffs include Facebook parent Meta, Twitter, Roku, Gannett, Disney, Warner Bros., Comcast, Paramount, CNN, ABC, and more, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/observer.com\/2022\/11\/major-layoffs-hit-the-media-and-entertainment-industries-heres-the-latest\/\">reports<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Meta, for example, laid off about 11,000 people, or 13 percent of its workforce, following a November announcement from CEO Mark Zuckerberg. And\u00a0Gannett, which owns USA Today, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/media\/video-emerges-washington-post-staffers-angry-publisher-refusing-take-questions-layoffs\">cut<\/a> about 6 percent of its workforce, or 3,440 employees.<\/p>\n<h2>Real Reason?<\/h2>\n<p>A spokesperson for the post told news outlets that the newspaper is \u201cevolving and transforming to put our business in the best position for future growth\u201d and will \u201cdirect our resources and invest in coverage, products, and people in service of providing high value to our subscribers and new audiences.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis will not be a net reduction in Post headcount,\u201d the statement said. \u201cRecently, we have made some of the largest investments in The Post\u2019s history and 2023 will be another year of continued investment.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>But the Washington Post Guild, the paper\u2019s union, said its members were \u201coutraged at the unceremonious announcement\u201d of job cuts and panned Ryan for not answering questions.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis behavior is unacceptable from any leader, but especially the leader of a news organization whose core values include transparency and accountability,\u201d the Guild said in a statement to news outlets. \u201cThere is no justification for The Post to lay off employees in a period of record growth and hiring.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Some commentators cheered the layoffs and said they were caused by Washington Post staffers\u2019 political biases.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen a media edifice chooses to cater to a tiny percentage of the population, many of them younger zennials with little to no money, it is only a matter of time before they face a profit collapse,\u201d wrote libertarian-leaning financial <a href=\"https:\/\/www.zerohedge.com\/economics\/get-woke-go-broke-washington-post-staff-meeting-erupts-chaos-layoffs-announced\">website<\/a> ZeroHedge. \u201cThe Washington Post is a victim of its own elitist ideology, and many of the employees are just as guilty as the leadership.
