And I couldn\u2019t believe it \u2026 The next thing I say is, \u2018We need to radio set.\u2019 I wanted Jim [Cameron] to know right away,\u201d she continued.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe\u2019s not competitive at all,\u201d the director quipped.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>She went on to describe that while Cameron never insisted she had to hold her breath that long, Winslet took it on as a personal challenge.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWell, I didn\u2019t have to hold my breath for over seven minutes,\u201d the \u201cTitanic\u201d star explained. \u201cIt\u2019s just that the opportunity to set a record presented itself. I wanted to break my own record, which was already six minutes and 14 seconds. And I was like, \u2018Come on!\u2019 So I smashed my own record by a minute.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Cameron had already expressed his intention to limit \u201cdry for wet\u201d scenes in the new \u201cAvatar\u201d so the high-stakes film could feel more authentic. He <a href=\"https:\/\/ew.com\/movies\/james-cameron-teases-avatar-sequel\/\">told<\/a> Entertainment Weekly in 2021 that faking underwater scenes didn\u2019t look real, which necessitated the actors going under during filming.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI said, \u2018It\u2019s not going to work. It\u2019s not going to look real,\u2019\u201d Cameron said. \u201cI even let them run a test, where we captured dry for wet, and then we captured in water, a crude level of our in-water capture. And it wasn\u2019t even close.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Despite the incredible challenge of holding her breath for so long, Winslet insisted that wasn\u2019t the most challenging thing about joining the \u201cAvatar\u201d cast.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe biggest challenge was something people really wouldn\u2019t imagine\u00a0 \u2013 it was fitting into this world and yet appearing to have always been there,\u201d the actress said.
