The HPSCI Republicans led by Rep. Brad Wenstrup of Ohio found \u201cindications that SARS-CoV-2 may have been tied to China\u2019s biological weapons research program and spilled over to the human population during a lab-related incident at the Wuhan Institute of Virology (WIV).\u201d<\/p>\n<p>U.S. intelligence agencies, along with <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/tag\/lab-leak\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">corporate media<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2022\/09\/01\/bombshell-emails-show-the-biden-administration-colluded-with-big-tech-to-censor-covid-misinformation\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Big Tech<\/a>, scrambled at Covid\u2019s release to censor suggestions the virus leaked from a lab working on gain-of-function research at the Wuhan Institute of Virology. Publications such as The Federalist that reported on evidence for the lab leak theory were punished by internet censors. <\/p>\n<p>Wenstrup confirmed during a press conference on Thursday that \u201cright now, there\u2019s no evidence that it came from nature.\u201d He also said China\u2019s communist government likely benefitted from misleading reports that Covid originated in a Chinese wet market, instead of from a government-run lab.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSince the People\u2019s Republic of China has not been transparent in sharing information, the IC is uniquely situated to provide relevant information. However, the IC has thus far failed to inform the public and failed to keep its Congressional oversight committees fully informed about what it knows,\u201d the report states. \u201cThe IC owes the American people greater transparency on the information it already has and must be fully transparent to those in Congress with oversight responsibility.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Instead of \u201cadequately\u201d addressing lab leak theories, the committee said various intelligence agencies \u2014 including the CIA, FBI, DHS, the State Department\u2019s Bureau of Intelligence and Research, Defense Intelligence Agency, the Department of Energy\u2019s Office of Intelligence and Counterintelligence, and the Undersecretary of Defense for Intelligence and Security \u2014 \u201cdownplayed the possibility that SARS-CoV2 was connected to China\u2019s bioweapons program based in part on input from outside experts.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Not only did intelligence bureaucrats fail to disclose to Congress which \u201cexperts\u201d they relied on to reach that conclusion, they also omitted important information from the declassified version of their classified assessment. <\/p>\n<p>These discrepancies, the committee stated, \u201ccould have been shared without damaging national security\u201d but were not supplied. Even after \u201cdozens\u201d of rounds of congressional demands, intelligence agencies failed to \u201cdisclose to the public its confidence level regarding this bioweapons assessment.\u201d They also \u201cfailed to correct claims\u201d in accordance with new information that \u201cundermined a key assertion in the report.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThese omissions likely skewed the public\u2019s understanding of key issues and deepened mistrust,\u201d the committee <a href=\"https:\/\/republicans-intelligence.house.gov\/uploadedfiles\/covid_origins_hpsci_handout_final.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">noted.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>The committee wants its report to encourage intelligence agencies to explore the ties between communist China\u2019s weapons program and Covid-19. If those agencies continue to stonewall, the HPSCI says it welcomes a report from the Government Accountability Office. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe have this responsibility to protect our national security and our national health,\u201d Wenstrup told reporters. \u201cAnd that\u2019s why we\u2019re looking into things.
