Josh Hawley (R-MO), was passed late Wednesday.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTikTok is a Trojan Horse for the Chinese Communist Party. It\u2019s a major security risk to the United States, and until it is forced to sever ties with China completely, it has no place on government devices,\u201d Hawley said in a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hawley.senate.gov\/hawley-bill-ban-tiktok-government-devices-passes-senate-unanimously\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">statement<\/a>\u00a0on Thursday. \u201cStates across the U.S. are banning TikTok on government devices. It\u2019s time for Joe Biden and the Democrats to help do the same.\u201d<\/p>\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Tonight the Senate unanimously passed my bill to BAN TikTok on all government devices<\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Josh Hawley (@HawleyMO) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/HawleyMO\/status\/1603196674842787842?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">December 15, 2022<\/a><\/p>\n<p>The bill will need to be passed in the House and signed by President Joe Biden to become law.<\/p>\n<p>FBI Director Christopher Wray noted TikTok\u2019s security concerns during a speech at the University of Michigan\u2019s Gerald R. Ford School of Public Policy earlier this month.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAll of these things are in the hands of a government that doesn\u2019t share our values, and that has a mission that\u2019s very much at odds with what\u2019s in the best interests of the United States. That should concern us,\u201d Wray <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/technology-china-united-states-national-security-government-and-politics-ac5c29cafaa1fc6bee990ed7e1fe5afc\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">said<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The Senate action comes as several states have banned TikTok from state-issued devices. The Daily Wire previously <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/three-more-states-ban-state-employees-from-using-tiktok-over-security-concerns-ccp-ties\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">noted<\/a> the three most recent states to take precautions against TikTok, with separate orders announced Tuesday and Wednesday by the governors of Alabama, Iowa, and North Dakota.<\/p>\n<p>Nebraska Republican Gov. Pete Ricketts was the first state leader to ban the app on state devices in August 2020. South Dakota Republican Governor Kristi Noem blocked the app in November, with several additional GOP-led states following.<\/p>\n<p>Other states that have enacted likeminded TikTok bans include Maryland, Oklahoma, South Carolina, Texas, and Utah. At least ten states now have bans in place, with others considering similar policies.<\/p>\n<p>A group of bipartisan lawmakers is also leading a drive to completely ban the use of TitTok nationwide.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Sen. Marco Rubio (R-FL) introduced the legislation in the Senate this month. Reps. Mike Gallagher (R-WI) and Raja Krishnamoorthi (D-IL) <a href=\"https:\/\/gallagher.house.gov\/media\/press-releases\/gallagher-rubio-introduce-bipartisan-legislation-ban-tiktok\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">introduced<\/a> companion legislation in the House.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">\u201cThe bipartisan\u00a0ANTI-SOCIAL CCP Act\u00a0is a strong step in protecting our nation from the nefarious digital surveillance and influence operations of totalitarian regimes,\u201d Krishnamoorthi\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.rubio.senate.gov\/public\/index.cfm?p=Press-Releases&#038;id=D1C2E147-3A23-4F49-AC27-268572AABDCD\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">said<\/a>\u00a0in a statement.<\/p>\n<p>Former President Donald Trump signed an executive order to ban TikTok in 2020. The order was never implemented following legal hurdles. Biden revoked it in June 2021, replacing it with his own <a href=\"https:\/\/www.whitehouse.gov\/briefing-room\/presidential-actions\/2021\/06\/09\/executive-order-on-protecting-americans-sensitive-data-from-foreign-adversaries\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">directive<\/a> to protect the data of Americans from foreign adversaries.<\/p>\n<p>TikTok has more than 100 million users in the U.S. It has been one of the most popular apps in both the Apple App Store and Google Play.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Senate unanimously passed a bill that would ban the use of TikTok on government devices amid growing national security concerns over the Chinese-owned social media platform.
