Flores, MD, thoracic surgeon, and Chief of the Division of Thoracic Surgery at Mount Sinai Hospital., told The Epoch Times.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Lung cancer is different.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>According to the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.lung.org\/lung-health-diseases\/lung-disease-lookup\/lung-cancer\/resource-library\/lung-cancer-fact-sheet\"><span>American Lung Association<\/span><\/a><span> (ALA), lung cancer is now the leading killer for both men and women in the U.S., and in 1987, it surpassed breast cancer to become the leading cause of cancer deaths in women.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>Some Lung Cancer Patients Have Signs While Most Do Not<\/h2>\n<p><span>Many of the symptoms of lung cancer depend on location.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cWhen you have a tumor that\u2019s closer to your trachea, you may cough up a little blood in early stage,\u201d Flores said. \u201cYou may have a wheeze.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>However, the majority of lung cancers don\u2019t occur centrally, near the trachea. Instead, they occur on the outer parts of the lung.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>When it\u2019s curable, you don\u2019t know it\u2019s there. Until it has spread.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>That\u2019s the biggest thing. \u201cI think everybody tries to ask what signs should I look for\u2014you\u2019re not going to have signs,\u201d said Flores.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC7678343\/\"><span>A 2020 Spainish study<\/span><\/a><span> published in the European Society for Medical Oncology Open analyzed the symptoms of non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC)\u2014the most common type of lung cancer. The study involved nearly 10,000 patients. The result showed that at stage I, the most common symptom was coughing, however, only 1.8 percent of the patients showed this symptom. There are treatments for both types that carry relatively high survival rates if the disease is caught early.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Small cell is usually treated with chemotherapy unless it\u2019s in its very early stage, called a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cancer.net\/cancer-types\/lung-cancer-non-small-cell\/stages#:~:text=A%20stage%20I%20lung%20cancer,the%20size%20of%20the%20tumor.\"><span>small nodule stage one<\/span><\/a><span>, when it can be removed surgically.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cBut they usually do chemotherapy in addition to that and they\u2019ll get a brain scan to make sure there\u2019s nothing that\u2019s spread to the brain,\u201d Flores said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Non-small cell lung cancer can be split into two categories\u2014adenocarcinoma and squamous cell carcinoma. They make up about <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cancer.org\/cancer\/lung-cancer\/about\/what-is.html\"><span>80 to 85 percent<\/span><\/a><span> of lung cancers.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cThese tend to grow and spread more slowly,\u201d said Aimee Strong, DNP, Nurse Practitioner, University of Virginia Thoracic Surgery, Lung Cancer Screening Program<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Adenocarcinoma often begins along the outer parts of the lungs and is the most common type of cancer in people who have never smoked.\u00a0However, squamous cell cancer can begin near the middle of the lungs.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Small cell lung cancer is almost always related to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theepochtimes.com\/t-smoking\">smoking<\/a>.\u00a0\u201cIt is fast growing and spreads quickly,\u201d\u00a0 said Strong.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>Smoking Is Not the Only Risk Factor<\/h2>\n<p><span>The degree of risk depends from person to person, and it\u2019s not only smoking but also secondhand smoke that increases the odds of developing lung cancer.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cLet\u2019s say you grew up in a household where mom and dad were smoking like chimneys, especially back in the seventies, you\u2019re at risk,\u201d Flores said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Flores has had patients who were DJs back when clubs were full of cigarette smoke, who eventually developed lung cancer.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>This isn\u2019t the only problem.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cPeople from 9\/11 who were exposed to the asbestos in the pulverized dust down there [are also at risk],\u201d he said.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Besides, research <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/34670806\/\"><span>published<\/span><\/a><span> in European Respiratory Review, finds that there is a significant genetic component to lung cancer risk.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>In China, lung cancer has been increasing <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.jto.org\/article\/S1556-0864(20)30375-0\/fulltext\"><span>over the past decades<\/span><\/a><span>.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cThere are some people who believe there\u2019s a genetic component to it, [and] that you see [it] in the Chinese population,\u201d said Flores. At the same time, \u201cwhen you go there you realize that pollution is out of control.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>He noted it\u2019s hard to say whether genetic or environmental factors play a bigger role, but tends to think this is due to the environmental conditions in China.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cI do believe that if you develop cancer, you got it from some external insult that caused the mutation in your system, that\u2019s given you this cancer,\u201d said Flores. \u201cI don\u2019t think it\u2019s just bad luck.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>Early Detection Is \u2018Very Curable\u2019, Screening Is Essential<\/h2>\n<p><span>There are significantly more treatment options for lung cancer than were available even five years ago, and more sophisticated forms of radiation therapy to treat the disease.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>When caught early, especially with the low-dose CAT scan, lung cancers are \u201cvery curable,\u201d said Flores.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>This even includes fast growing small cell lung cancers.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>The problem is not that we don\u2019t have a cure.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cWe have a cure, 80 percent of the people with stage I will be cured,\u201d Flores said. \u201cThe problem is that we don\u2019t catch it early enough.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>He said the best solution is screening, and people who should be screened for lung cancer include:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><span>Current and former smokers<\/span><\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><span>People exposed to asbestos or radon gas<\/span><\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><span>Those with a family history of lung cancer<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span>People who are at risk can see a lung physician, whether it\u2019s a surgeon, a pulmonologist, a radiologist, or an internal medicine doctor.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Flores observed that many at risk due to previous smoking, now have families.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cThey have this guilt that they smoked and how can you fix that guilt?\u201d Flores asked. \u201cGet a screening CAT scan.\u201d<\/span><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"author_wrapper\">\n<div class=\"one_author_block round\">\n<div class=\"top_row\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theepochtimes.com\/author-george-citroner\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/george-citroner-.png\" alt=\"George Citroner\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Follow<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>George Citroner is a health reporter for The Epoch Times.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Lung cancer is often called \u201cthe silent killer,\u201d because it can go unnoticed until reaching advanced stages when death is inevitable.
