Its recommendations to the California Legislature must be delivered by July 1.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt is important to get this right because we are setting the precedent for other states and localities, and also for the federal government as well,\u201d Kamilah V. Moore, the chair of the committee, said Wednesday.<\/p>\n<p>In September 2020, California Democrat governor Gavin Newsom <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.ca.gov\/2020\/09\/30\/governor-newsom-signs-landmark-legislation-to-advance-racial-justice-and-californias-fight-against-systemic-racism-bias-in-our-legal-system\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">signed<\/a> a first-in-the-nation law to create a state-based task force to make recommendations on slavery reparations to the black community.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAs a nation, we can only truly thrive when every one of us has the opportunity to thrive,\u201d Newsom stated. \u201cOur painful history of slavery has evolved into structural racism and bias built into and permeating throughout our democratic and economic institutions.\u00a0 \u2026 While there is still so much work to do to unravel this legacy, these pieces of legislation are important steps in the right direction to building a more inclusive and equitable future for all.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Newsom signed two bills by Democrat Assemblymember Shirley Weber, who declared, \u201cWe have not come to terms with our state\u2019s\u00a0ugly past that allowed slaveholding\u00a0within our borders and returned escaped slaves to their masters.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>On Wednesday in Massachusetts, the Boston City Council voted to <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/politics-boston-slavery-government-and-6a5e36f746db813b2f42444e180be7b2\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">create a task force<\/a> to examine the idea of reparations.<\/p>\n<p>Last year, the Evanston City Council in Illinois\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/dailywire.com\/news\/illinois-city-approves-first-government-reparations-program-in-us\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">voted<\/a> to give reparations to its black residents, allocating $400,000 to be paid out in homeownership and improvement grants up to $25,000. \u201cThe Local Reparations Restorative Housing Program \u2026 acknowledges the harm caused to Black\/African-American Evanston residents due to discriminatory housing policies and practices and inaction on the part of the City,\u201d a resolution from the council stated.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A black activist appearing before California\u2019s first reparations task force meeting insisted that every black person in the state receive\u00a0$350,000 and black-owned businesses should receive $250,000.
