What transpired on the topic during the intervening 267 years? Not much. Science confirmed what men and women have known since Adam and Eve began talking past each other \u2014 not only do the sexes have immutable physiological differences, down to their genetic matter, but they observe, act, and think differently as well. <\/p>\n<p>Yet Cambridge now <a href=\"https:\/\/dictionary.cambridge.org\/us\/dictionary\/english\/woman\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">says<\/a> the definition of woman is, \u201cAn adult who lives and identifies as female though they may have been said to have a different sex at birth\u201d (and the definition of a \u201cman\u201d is someone who \u201cidentifies as male though they may have been said to have a different sex at birth.\u201d) How does one use \u201cwoman\u201d in a sentence? One of Cambridge\u2019s examples is, \u201cMary is a woman who was assigned male at birth.\u201d Who assigned Mary\u2019s sex? Her parents? God? Evolution? The SRY gene? And what other human characteristics does Cambridge believe can be altered according to one\u2019s feelings? Lexicographers have a responsibility to offer clarity and accuracy \u2014 which is, of course, impossible in this case.<\/p>\n<p>When asked about the change, Sophie White, a spokeswoman from Cambridge University Press, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/dc-md-va\/2022\/12\/13\/woman-definition-cambridge-dictionary-transgender\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">told<\/a> The Washington Post that the editors had \u201ccarefully studied usage patterns of the word woman and concluded that this definition is one that learners of English should be aware of to support their understanding of how the language is used.\u201d This is tautological gibberish. Though, in fairness to White, \u201cWokeish\u201d is a relatively new language. <\/p>\n<p>The Post, for instance, claims Cambridge updated its definitions for \u201cwoman\u201d and \u201cman\u201d \u201cto <em>include <\/em>transgender people.\u201d (Incredulous italics mine.) This also makes zero sense. If Cambridge changed the definition of \u201cblack\u201d or \u201cCaucasian\u201d to incorporate \u201cAsian people,\u201d it would not be <em>including<\/em> a new group, it would be altering the fundamental facts of what makes someone black or white or Asian. \u201cWoman\u201d is not a neologism. Our understanding of \u201cwoman\u201d hasn\u2019t been altered by new scientific discoveries. Nothing has changed. <\/p>\n<p>As hard as I try, it is difficult not to bring up Orwell these days. In \u201cPolitics and the English Language,\u201d Orwell <a href=\"https:\/\/www.orwellfoundation.com\/the-orwell-foundation\/orwell\/essays-and-other-works\/politics-and-the-english-language\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">notes<\/a> that the \u201cstruggle against the abuse of language\u201d is often treated as a \u201csentimental archaism, like preferring candles to electric light or hansom cabs to aeroplanes.\u201d But how can we deny that ideas are corrupting language, and language is corrupting thought?<\/p>\n<p>At first, these liturgic declarations of one\u2019s \u201cpronouns\u201d seemed relatively harmless to me. And, not that it matters much, but I\u2019ve been perfectly willing to refer to adults in whatever manner they desire. It\u2019s a free country. Pursue your happiness. It\u2019s not like gender-bending is some new idea.
