Belonging Begins with Us is backed by Stand Together, a project of the Charles Koch Foundation, and a coalition of progressive philanthropists including Mark Zuckerberg and Pierre Omidyar.<\/p>\n<p>The commercial features an overwrought cover version of the 1970s folk hit &#8220;Walk a Mile in My Shoes&#8221; and shows scenes of friends gathering at a birthday party and at a lunch table while shooting suspicious glances at nearby immigrants who were excluded from the group. Another scene shows a little girl of color waving at a white family, which ignores her.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We all know what it&#8217;s like to feel left out. To feel out of place. To feel invisible. To feel unwelcome,&#8221; says a caption. &#8220;And for people who move to this country, that feeling lasts more than a moment. We can change that.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Many viewers of the NFL Network have taken to Twitter to pan the commercial, calling the song &#8220;annoying&#8221; and arguing that the heavy-handed message unfairly portrays Americans as unwelcoming to immigrants.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Your \u2018walk a mile in my shoes&#8217; commercial is quite possibly the most annoying thing ever put on television,&#8221; one Twitter poster\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/travis_holland\/status\/1596137192501530624\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">complained<\/a> in November.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The \u2018Walk a mile in my shoes&#8217; commercial that plays every 7 mins on the NFL Network has to be THE single worst creation in human history,&#8221; <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/otundeo\/status\/1574822608385839126\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">noted<\/a> another NFL fan.<\/p>\n<p>Others <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/Goirishglory88\/status\/1559711116082692103\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">called<\/a> it the &#8220;worst commercial I have ever seen&#8221; <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/zagtastic13\/status\/1553394067957944322\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">and<\/a> &#8220;OVERKILL TIMES A BILLION!!&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The campaign is the latest indicator of Koch&#8217;s emerging partnership with the far left, which also includes teaming up with Democratic super-donor George Soros to push <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.com\/news\/2019\/12\/02\/george-soros-and-charles-koch-take-on-the-endless-wars-074737\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">isolationist<\/a> policies through the Quincy Institute.<\/p>\n<p>The commercial directs viewers to the website &#8220;Belonging Begins with Us.&#8221; The website describes itself as a &#8220;partnership between the Ad Council and a coalition of partner organizations from across the country&#8221; and aims to &#8220;create a more welcoming nation where everyone can belong.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The coalition includes Stand Together, the philanthropic group at the center of the Koch network.
