Bruen<\/i>.<\/p>\n<p>A majority of justices<br \/>\n<a class=\"Link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.scotusblog.com\/2022\/06\/in-6-3-ruling-court-strikes-down-new-yorks-concealed-carry-law\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">ruled<\/a><br \/>\n in the <i>Bruen<\/i> case that New York\u2019s concealed carry permitting system was unconstitutional because it forced applicants to demonstrate that they had \u201cproper cause\u201d \u2014 beyond just a desire to carry their legally owned firearms \u2014 to deserve a permit.<\/p>\n<p>Writing for the majority opinion, Justice Clarence Thomas noted that he knew of \u201cno other constitutional right that an individual may exercise only after demonstrating to government officers some special need.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That left some states, such as New Jersey,<br \/>\n<a class=\"Link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nj.com\/politics\/2022\/12\/nj-lawmakers-push-to-pass-concealed-carry-permit-legislation-by-end-of-the-year-cueing-up-legal-fight.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">concerned<\/a><br \/>\n that their existing laws may suffer the same fate as New York\u2019s and spurred lawmakers to consider other ways to sidestep the framework established in the case.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey know they\u2019re getting laws struck down, so they\u2019re trying to pass laws to get around it, and their problem is, all these laws they\u2019re passing are more restrictive,\u201d Alan Gottlieb, founder of the Second Amendment Foundation, told the <i>Washington Examiner<\/i>.<\/p>\n<p>Gottlieb said his organization is involved in two of five lawsuits currently concerning the controversial Oregon gun law, known as Measure 114, which passed on the ballot in the midterm elections.<\/p>\n<p>Perhaps Measure 114\u2019s most controversial element is its permitting structure. Oregon residents will have to complete extensive training courses that,<br \/>\n<a class=\"Link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/us\/police-caught-guard-oregon-gun-permit-law-ask-state-time\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">according to<\/a><br \/>\n the Oregon State Sheriffs\u2019 Association, don\u2019t currently exist in one program.<\/p>\n<p>Local police departments will be<br \/>\n<a class=\"Link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.koin.com\/local\/osp-launches-new-gun-permit-website-while-measure-114-remains-on-hold\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">responsible<\/a><br \/>\n for approving or denying permit applications after implementation of the law, which was set to take effect on Thursday but which a judge put on hold.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRight there, that becomes an issue of discretion, and the Supreme Court in <i>Bruen<\/i> clearly said you cannot have discretion in issuing permits. You cannot do that,\u201d Erich Pratt, senior vice president of Gun Owners of America, told the <i>Washington Examiner<\/i>. \u201cThat\u2019s why we think, ultimately, they will not be successful.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>New York lawmakers quickly changed their gun laws after the Supreme Court\u2019s June decision but found their new rules just as controversial in the courts.<\/p>\n<p>The state replaced its \u201cproper cause\u201d standard<br \/>\n<a class=\"Link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/restoring-america\/fairness-justice\/good-moral-requirements-under-ny-carry-law-racist-roots\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">with a \u201cgood moral character\u201d standard<\/a><br \/>\n for permitting that, among other things, required applicants to<br \/>\n<a class=\"Link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ny1.com\/nyc\/all-boroughs\/politics\/2022\/07\/01\/new-york-s-proposed-gun-laws-include--character-and-conduct--social-media-check\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">hand over<\/a><br \/>\n their social media handles so state officials could examine their online conduct.<\/p>\n<p>The new law also established a number of places as \u201csensitive\u201d areas where even permitted gun owners cannot carry their guns concealed, including churches and Times Square.<\/p>\n<p>Critics of the law say New York continued to impose a subjective test on gun owners and continued to trample their right to carry a gun outside their home, two things the Supreme Court expressly rejected in <i>Bruen<\/i>.<\/p>\n<p>Gun rights advocates have challenged the new law.<\/p>\n<p><b><br \/>\n<a class=\"Link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">CLICK HERE TO READ MORE FROM THE WASHINGTON EXAMINER<\/a><br \/>\n<\/b><\/p>\n<p>Beyond permitting, some blue states are taking aim at types of firearms or sizes of magazines in ways that they hope won\u2019t run afoul of the Supreme Court.<\/p>\n<p>Pennsylvania Democrats are<br \/>\n<a class=\"Link\" href=\"https:\/\/patch.com\/pennsylvania\/norristown\/ban-firearms-high-capacity-magazines-weighed-pa\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">pushing<\/a><br \/>\n a measure that would stop the sale of firearms that can accept more than 15 rounds of bullets or five shotgun shells, for example, with the proposal\u2019s supporters citing the use of high-capacity guns in mass shootings.<\/p>\n<p>In Connecticut, Democratic Gov.
