It\u2019s rude, crude and full of love for both Westerns and people of all races.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s also the ultimate example of a classic that wouldn\u2019t be made today in its current form.<\/p>\n<p>But there are others.<\/p>\n<p>Some films don\u2019t make sense when it comes to possible remakes. The 1983 comedy \u201cMr. Mom,\u201d for example, lampooned the idea of a father (Michael Keaton) doing so-called domestic work.<\/p>\n<p>Today, millions of stay-at-home dads can do household chores while providing children with a strong father figure.<\/p>\n<p>The following movies served up storylines and gags that simply wouldn\u2019t pass muster with today\u2019s social media scolds for very different reasons.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Bad News Bears\u201d<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s one of the best baseball movies ever. Walter Matthau plays former minor league player Morris Buttermaker who coaches a rag-tag little league team to the championships. Along the way a boozy Buttermaker passes out on the pitcher\u2019s mound and, later, gives beer to his pre-teen charges.<\/p>\n<p>The screenplay features plenty of racially-charged epithets, some uttered by the young players.<\/p>\n<p>They staged a remake via 2005\u2019s \u201cBad News Bears\u201d with Billy Bob Thornton, but some of those rough edges were sanded smooth. Any attempt at a retelling \u201cBears\u201d now would look nothing like the source material.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSome Like It Hot\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The recent Broadway revival of the hit 1959 movie changed the film\u2019s classic moments and, in the process, removed all the funny from it. The man who thought Jack Lemmon\u2019s character was an actual woman learns he\u2019s a dude and shrugs, \u201cWell, nobody\u2019s perfect.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s one of the best final film lines ever, but in the musical version the confused paramour says, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/stage\/2022\/dec\/11\/some-like-it-hot-review-broadway-adaptation-lukewarm\">\u201cYou\u2019re perfect.\u201d<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Drag comedy existed for decades. Everyone from Milton Berle to Monty Python put on women\u2019s clothing for yuks. It\u2019s mostly obsolete today, and certainly no one would dare pitch a movie about two straight white men who dress up as women to escape a mobster. Even if it\u2019s considered in some circles as the <a href=\"https:\/\/economictimes.indiatimes.com\/magazines\/panache\/billy-wilders-some-like-it-hot-is-the-best-comedy-film-ever-made\/articleshow\/60176544.cms?from=mdr\">greatest screen comedy of all time<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Any \u201cHot\u201d remake would sink under the woke demands of modern storytelling. Just look, once more, at the musical update which had one of the two drag performers embraces non-binary status after putting on a dress.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Toy\u201d<\/p>\n<p>This 1982 comedy follows a very wealthy white man (Jackie Gleason) who buys his son a unique gift \u2014 a black man (Richard Pryor) tasked with serving as the lad\u2019s friend or, as one character describes it, his \u201ctoy.\u201d Maybe woke bylaws aren\u2019t so bad in this case. Who would entertain such a pitch in today\u2019s world?<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShallow Hal\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Cheap fat jokes, both then and now, are \u2026 cheap. They still were told for decades before the era of \u201cfat shaming\u201d made them obsolete.<\/p>\n<p>Yet the Farrelly brothers\u2019 \u201cShallow Hal\u201d isn\u2019t just an assembly line of fat gags. It\u2019s a sweet story about a jerk (Jack Black) who learns to look past one-dimensional beauty to find his perfect partner.<\/p>\n<p>The 2001 comedy finds Gwyneth Paltrow playing an obese woman who charms Black\u2019s character after he undergoes a sort of hypnosis. He can only see a woman\u2019s inner beauty and love swiftly blooms.<\/p>\n<p>No modern satirist would attempt something as tricky as \u201cShallow Hal,\u201d even if the ultimate message is one of acceptance, not hate.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI Now Pronounce You Chuck And Larry\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Most critics loathe Adam Sander comedies, and yet this 2007 romp is shockingly sensitive \u2014 in between the outrageous bits. Sandler and Kevin James play straight fire fighters who pretend to be a gay couple in order to secure insurance for James\u2019 children.<\/p>\n<p>The comic leads perform as broadly as many expected, but what those revisiting the film will see is how genuinely inclusive the story proves. Yet the Sandler\/James \u201cgay panic\u201d bits alone would prevent the movie from being produced today, for starters.<\/p>\n<p>Critics pounced, and seized, on \u201cChuck and Larry\u201d during its theatrical release but GLAAD had kinder comments, citing its message of <a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20121003051343\/http:\/www.ew.com\/ew\/article\/0,,20035169,00.html\">\u201cequality and respect.\u201d<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Plus, \u201cChuck and Larry\u201d doesn\u2019t have a political agenda beyond laughs, family bonds and treating everyone with kindness. That\u2019s not enough for today\u2019s woke warriors, who would transform the movie into a series of LGBTQ+ lectures.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDirty Harry\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Rampaging crime rates make it a perfect time for \u201cDirty\u201d Harry Callahan to take out the trash. Again.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>This 1971 smash connected to the zeitgeist by showing a cop who didn\u2019t play by the rules. Yes, 50+ years ago that sounded fresher than it does today.<\/p>\n<p>Liberal critics like Pauline Kael raged against Clint Eastwood\u2019s \u201cHarry\u201d upon its release, using the same language as progressives uncork today \u2014 \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.rogerebert.com\/roger-ebert\/dirty-harry-is-not-fascist\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Fascist<\/a>!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Eastwood\u2019s cop takes down the bad guys on his terms, and he even mocks some of their ethnic<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Never argue with a living legend like Mel Brooks.
