The total <a href=\"https:\/\/www.boxofficemojo.com\/title\/tt16378064\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">box office haul<\/a> for opening weekend was a less-than-stellar $9,667, according to Box Office Mojo.<\/p>\n<p>Lears\u2019 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rottentomatoes.com\/m\/knock_down_the_house\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">previous offering<\/a>, Netflix\u2019s \u201cKnock Down the House,\u201d also prominently featured Ocasio-Cortez and earned high marks from critics \u2014 Rotten Tomatoes gave it a critic score of 99% fresh. Viewers were not as kind, giving the film a rating of just 11%.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTo the End\u201d has already garnered a critic score of 83% on the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rottentomatoes.com\/m\/to_the_end\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">film-rating site<\/a>, but at the time of publication, too few audience members had voted for the viewer score to be posted.<\/p>\n<p>Exhibitor Relations Co. (@ERCboxoffice) did the math on the depressing opening-weekend numbers, determining that the per-theater average was even worse than the overall box office take.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is it the end, my friend,\u201d they tweeted on Monday once the numbers were in for the weekend showings. \u201cRoadside Attractions\u2019 documentary on climate change, TO THE END, \u2018starring\u2019 AOC, was voted out of the box office \u2014 just $9,667 in 120 theaters, $81 per. Yes, $81 per.\u201d<\/p>\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Nobody cares less about climate change than\u2026theatergoers.<\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Exhibitor Relations Co. (@ERCboxoffice) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/ERCboxoffice\/status\/1602383559431315457?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">December 12, 2022<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u201cNobody cares less about climate change than \u2026 theatergoers,\u201d they concluded.<\/p>\n<p>As if to belabor that point, Mediaite noted that \u201cTo the End\u201d debuted alongside Atlas Distribution\u2019s gory horror flick \u201cThe Mean One,\u201d based (very) loosely on the 1957 Dr. Seuss children\u2019s classic, \u201cHow the Grinch Stole Christmas.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Mean One\u201d debuted in 162 theaters and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.boxofficemojo.com\/release\/rl3170075393\/weekend\/?ref_=bo_rl_tab#tabs\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">pulled in<\/a> over $218,000 \u2014 an average of just over $1300 per theater \u2014 suggesting, as Mediaite concluded, that moviegoers would rather watch a Christmas-themed slasher flick than listen to more lectures about climate from the same cast of characters.<\/p>\n<p>Another film released to limited theaters, for the sake of comparison, was Darren Aronofsky\u2019s \u201cThe Whale\u201d \u2014 which <a href=\"https:\/\/www.boxofficemojo.com\/title\/tt13833688\/?ref_=bo_se_r_1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">pulled in<\/a> $360,000 from just six theaters in New York and California and averaged $60,000 per theater during the same time frame.<\/p>\n<p>In addition to being the <a href=\"https:\/\/variety.com\/2022\/film\/news\/the-whale-brendan-fraser-box-office-opening-weekend-1235456964\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">best indie-film opening<\/a> of the year and already generating Oscar buzz \u2014 primarily for lead actor <a href=\"https:\/\/dailywire.com\/news\/are-you-pulling-my-chain-adam-sandler-claims-he-discovered-brendan-fraser-in-hilarious-joint-interview\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Brendan Fraser<\/a> \u2014 \u201cThe Whale\u201d marks Aronofsky\u2019s best per-theater average for an opening weekend since 2010\u2019s \u201cThe Black Swan.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A climate change documentary aimed at promoting Green New Deal initiatives \u2014 and featuring Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez \u2014 gave new meaning to the term \u201cBox Office Bomb\u201d with its dismal opening weekend.
