Aronofsky said he was surprised by that reaction and still stands behind his decision.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cActors have been using makeup since the beginning of acting \u2014 that\u2019s one of their tools,\u201d the film director told Yahoo Entertainment during a recent <a href=\"https:\/\/www.yahoo.com\/entertainment\/brendan-fraser-says-that-his-kids-inspired-his-transformative-performance-in-the-whale-181128097.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">interview<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd the lengths we went to portray the realism of the make-up has never been done before. One of my first calls after casting Brendan was to my makeup artist, Adrien Morot. I asked him, \u2018Can we do something that\u2019s realistic?\u2019 Because if it\u2019s going to look like a joke, then we shouldn\u2019t do it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Aronofsky went on to discuss how Fraser approached the character with compassion and went out of his way to create an insightful narrative about him.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPeople with obesity are generally written as bad guys or as punchlines,\u201d the director explained. \u201cWe wanted to create a fully worked-out character who has bad parts about him and good parts about him; Charlie is very selfish, but he\u2019s also full of love and is seeking forgiveness. So [the controversy] makes no sense to me. Brendan Fraser is the right actor to play this role, and the film is an exercise in empathy.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Fraser also expressed his commitment to the role.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCharlie is not the person he presents,\u201d Fraser says of his character. \u201cHe\u2019s not the person who we so often dismiss. He\u2019s a man who lives with obesity, but he\u2019s also a father and he\u2019s also a teacher. He\u2019s someone who can bring out the best in others even when they can\u2019t see that in themselves. Tragically, he can\u2019t do that for himself.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The \u201cGeorge of the Jungle\u201d actor called Charlie a \u201cwell-rounded character\u201d who he approached with \u201cempathy.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Fraser was just nominated for a Golden Globe for Best Actor in a Drama despite saying he <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/my-mother-didnt-raise-a-hypocrite-brendan-fraser-explains-why-fans-wont-see-him-at-golden-globes\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">refuses to attend<\/a> the ceremony on principle.
