The email said Twitter was \u201creevaluating how best to bring external insights\u201d and the council is \u201cnot the best structure to do this.\u201d<\/p>\n<div class=\"teads-inread sm-screen\">\n<div id=\"teads0\" class=\"teads-player\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>\u201cOur work to\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/kanye-west-elon-musk-twitter-inc-entertainment-technology-0bf6e0ab969a60cd38abd9358ee5fd47\">make Twitter a safe, informative place<\/a>\u00a0will be moving faster and more aggressively than ever before and we will continue to welcome your ideas going forward about how to achieve this goal,\u201d said the email, which was signed \u201cTwitter.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The volunteer group provided expertise and guidance on how Twitter could better combat\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/elon-musk-twitter-inc-technology-european-union-europe-85e8b6d1fa4c860b3843600d3ebd12fb\">hate, harassment and other harms<\/a>\u00a0but didn\u2019t have any decision-making authority and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/elon-musk-technology-donald-trump-business-misinformation-c60bc41229339eaec5008188fa6d057c\">didn\u2019t review specific content disputes<\/a>.\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/elon-musk-twitter-deal-live-updates-78d68790fb0b9971d6e65b76d97e3670\">Shortly after buying Twitter for $44 billion in late October,<\/a>\u00a0Musk said he would form a new \u201ccontent moderation council\u201d to help make major decisions but later changed his mind.a<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTwitter\u2019s Trust and Safety Council was a group of volunteers who over many years gave up their time when consulted by Twitter staff to offer advice on a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/elon-musk-technology-business-government-and-politics-2907d382db132cfd7446152b9309992c\">wide range of online harms and safety issues<\/a>,\u201d tweeted council Thursday in an email in which it promised an \u201copen conversation and Q&amp;A\u201d with Twitter staff, including the new head of trust and safety, Ella Irwin.<\/p>\n<p>That came on the same day that three council members announced they were resigning in a public statement posted on Twitter that said that \u201ccontrary to claims by Elon Musk, the safety and wellbeing of Twitter\u2019s users are on the decline.\u201d<\/p>\n<div class=\"nlp-ignore-block article-content rich-text\">\n<aside class=\"promo-link\"><a class=\"promo-link__link\" will increase to 4,000<\/a><\/aside>\n<\/div>\n<p>Those former council members soon became the target of online attacks after Musk amplified criticism of them and Twitter\u2019s past leadership for allegedly not doing enough to stop child sexual exploitation on the platform.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt is a crime that they refused to take action on child exploitation for years!\u201d Musk tweeted.<\/p>\n<p>A growing number of attacks on the council led to concerns from some remaining members who sent an email to Twitter earlier on Monday demanding the company stop misrepresenting the council\u2019s role.<\/p>\n<p>Those false accusations by Twitter leaders were \u201cendangering current and former Council members,\u201d the email said.<\/p>\n<p>The Trust and Safety Council, in fact, had as one of its advisory groups one that focused on child exploitation.
