Irwin took the job in November following an exodus of former Twitter managers after Musk bought the company in October.<\/p>\n<p>In one recent example, Twitter suspended rapper Kanye \u201cYe\u201d West after he posted a swastika inside a Star of David following a stream of controversial comments in interviews and videos about Jewish people. Twitter said that West was banned for \u201cincitement to violence.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>When asked whether West\u2019s suspension was permanent or temporary, Irwin did not say. \u201cI don\u2019t know that we know the answer to that yet,\u201d she told the paper in an interview published\u00a0Monday.<\/p>\n<p>At the time of the rapper\u2019s suspension, Musk <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/elonmusk\/status\/1598543670990495744\">wrote<\/a> that \u201cI tried my best\u201d and said West \u201cagain violated our rule against incitement to violence \u2026 account will be suspended.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Alan Rozenshtein, an associate professor of law at the\u00a0University of Minnesota Law School, told the WSJ that while he deplores West\u2019s comments, the image that West posted \u201cdoes not even come remotely close to incitement under First Amendment law.\u201d The First Amendment applies to speech restrictions issued by the government.<\/p>\n<p>Irwin declined to tell the paper about how many people work in\u00a0Twitter\u2019s Trust and Safety team. She said it has enough resources and staff.<\/p>\n<p>The company will now use more automation to perform content moderation duties, Irwin said. Musk has described himself as a \u201cfree speech absolutist\u201d but may have to make some concessions to advertisers who continue to purchase ads on the platform.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf you were to tweet something that had some hateful slur in it, we may deamplify that tweet,\u201d she said, adding, \u201cYou\u2019re allowed to say it, but we don\u2019t have to give you the reach of getting that out to every user on our platform.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2>Previous Management<\/h2>\n<p>Yoel Roth, Twitter\u2019s former chief of Trust and Safety, departed the company in November and claimed Musk would not listen to his warnings or guidance. Meanwhile, Roth drew considerable controversy after Musk endorsed and helped release internal files and communications this month, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theepochtimes.com\/mkt_app\/twitter-deviated-from-longstanding-policy-to-justify-trump-ban-part-4-of-twitter-files-reveals_4916557.html\">apparently showing<\/a> that he changed the company\u2019s rules specifically to ban former President Donald Trump\u2019s account in early 2021.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSince the deal closed on Oct\u200c. 27\u200c\u200c, many of the changes made by Mr. Musk and his team have been sudden and alarming for employees and users alike, including rapid-fire layoffs and an ill-fated foray into reinventing Twitter\u2019s verification system,\u201d he wrote for The New York Times and claimed that Google and Apple could restrict Twitter from being used on their phones.<\/p>\n<p>Over the past weekend, Roth also drew <a href=\"https:\/\/contra.substack.com\/p\/yoel-roth-gay-data-and-child-exploitation\">criticism<\/a> for old Twitter posts he made as well as a\u00a0doctoral <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.md\/S0wZ9\">dissertation<\/a> about children. His\u00a02016 dissertation at the University of Pennsylvania, about a gay dating app, was reportedly withdrawn from the university\u2019s website in recent days.<\/p>\n<p>Roth has not issued a public response to the criticism. The Epoch Times has contacted him for comment on recent posts made by Musk.<\/p>\n<p>Musk had <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/elonmusk\/status\/1601313922501353472?s=20&#038;t=q_BTnx-1dYHvOOAXu4-G6A\">asserted<\/a>\u00a0that Twitter\u00a0\u201crefused to take action on child exploitation for years\u201d under the previous management. That remark came in response to an update that\u00a0Anne Collier, Eirliani Abdul Rahman, and Lesley Podesta resigned from Twitter\u2019s Trust and Safety division.<\/p>\n<p>Former Twitter CEO and co-founder Jack Dorsey disagreed with Musk, flatly replying to his <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/mims\/statuses\/1601333939985006592?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">post,<\/a>\u00a0\u201cThis is false.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>However, Musk fired back at Dorsey and stated that \u201cwhen Ella Irwin, who now runs Trust &#038; Safety, joined Twitter earlier this year, almost no one was working on child safety.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He added that Irwin had raised her concerns with former CEO Parag Agrawal and ex-chief financial officer Ned Segal.
