Reynolds, a unit of <span class=\"QuoteInBody-quoteNameContainer\" data-test=\"QuoteInBody\" id=\"RegularArticle-QuoteInBody-1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/quotes\/BTI\/\">British American Tobacco<\/a><span class=\"QuoteInBody-inlineButton\"><span class=\"AddToWatchlistButton-watchlistContainer\" id=\"-WatchlistDropdown\" data-analytics-id=\"-WatchlistDropdown\"><button class=\"AddToWatchlistButton-watchlistButton\"><span class=\"QuoteInBody-quoteNameContainer\" data-test=\"QuoteInBody\"><\/span><\/button><\/span><\/span><\/span>, and other major tobacco companies seeking to stop or delay the measure, which is set to take effect next week.<\/p>\n<p>The law was first passed two years ago, but tobacco companies successfully funded a campaign to block its implementation and put the issue on this year&#8217;s statewide ballot.<\/p>\n<p>Justices, however, upheld the ban without explanation or any public dissent.<\/p>\n<p>R.J. Reynolds, which sells Newport menthol cigarettes, argued the ban contradicts the Tobacco Control Act of 2009, a federal law that prohibits states from blocking the sale of tobacco products.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;They can raise the minimum purchase age, restrict sales to particular times and locations, and enforce licensing regimes,&#8221; lawyers for the plaintiffs wrote in their <a href=\"https:\/\/www.supremecourt.gov\/DocketPDF\/22\/22A474\/247652\/20221129161032131_RJR%20v.%20Bonta%20-%20Emergency%20Application%20for%20Writ%20of%20Injunction.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">injuction application<\/a>. &#8220;But one thing they cannot do is completely prohibit the sale of those products for failing to meet the state&#8217;s or locality&#8217;s preferred tobacco product standards.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The plaintiffs also argued that the tobacco industry will face &#8220;substantial financial losses&#8221; from the law. Menthol cigarettes make up about a third of the market in California, they told the Court.<\/p>\n<p>R.J.
