It\u2019s being <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/23501898\/guillermo-del-toro-pinocchio-netflix-review\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">described<\/a> as an \u201canti-fascist morality play\u201d that\u2019s \u201cdark and gritty.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPeople ask us if it is for kids [and] we say, \u2018It\u2019s not made for kids but kids can watch it if their parents talk to them.\u2019 It\u2019s not a babysitter movie, it\u2019s a movie that will have kids ask questions,\u201d the \u201cPan\u2019s Labyrinth\u201d director told <a href=\"https:\/\/pagesix.com\/2022\/12\/11\/guillermo-del-toros-pinocchio-is-not-a-babysitter-movie\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Page Six<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The story of a wooden puppet who wants to become a real boy was created in 1883 by Carlo Collodi. The most well-known adaptation came from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/topic\/disney\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Disney<\/a> in 1940.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe important thing for me is that it can stand thematically side to side with \u2018Pan\u2019s Labyrinth\u2019 or \u2018The Devil\u2019s Backbone,\u2019 that was the idea,\u201d the director said. \u201cIt took us this long to make it, amongst other things, because we wanted it to be thematically relevant.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Del Toro also spoke about some of the themes he hoped to convey with this new project.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cObedience to me is when you are told to follow something whether, on a religious level or social level, that you don\u2019t understand, that is a big mistake. Disobedience with consciousness is always the beginning of thought, of soul and self,\u201d he continued.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen I was a practicing Catholic, not lapsed as I am now, I used to think about where the human soul lies \u2014 it lies in the freedom of choice. The choice is to be human.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The director said something similar while speaking with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.latimes.com\/entertainment-arts\/movies\/story\/2022-12-09\/guillermo-del-toro-pinocchio-netflix-fascism-father-figures\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The Los Angeles Times<\/a>, explaining that the movie is \u201cnot necessarily made for children, but children can watch it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPinocchio is there to transform the lives of the others,\u201d Del Toro told the publication. \u201cIt\u2019s almost the adventures of Geppetto, this movie. Geppetto, who\u2019s obsessed with perfection at the beginning \u2026 ends up saying, \u2018Whatever you are, whoever you are, I love you just as you are.\u2019 This was the impetus behind this [movie].\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Del Toro took inspiration from his own life while crafting the narrative.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey both represent sort of a disenfranchised son, with a father that just throws them into the world, hoping they will figure it out,\u201d he added. \u201cI felt that it was a close match to my child-rearing experience.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPinocchio\u201d is currently available on Netflix.<\/p>\n<p><em>Disclosure: The Daily Wire has <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/videos\/introducing-dw-kids\">announced plans<\/a> for kids entertainment content.<\/p>\n<p><\/em><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>\u201cPinocchio\u201d director Guillermo del Toro is cautioning parents that the stop-motion animated remake of the film is not meant for children to watch without supervision.
