How the old Twitter failed the fight against children&#8217;s sexual exploitation content (sigh) and more<\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Andrea Stroppa \ud83d\udc3a Claudius Nero&#8217;s Legion \ud83d\udc3a (@andst7) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/andst7\/status\/1601365933561217024?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">December 9, 2022<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe more we work on child sexual abuse material on Twitter, the more we find the HELL left by the old Twitter management,\u201d Stroppa <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/andst7\/status\/1601365933561217024\">wrote<\/a>\u00a0in a Twitter thread.<\/p>\n<p>Stroppa said those accounts have since been taken down.<\/p>\n<p>Twitter\u2019s alleged CSAM problem has been <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/commentisfree\/2012\/aug\/13\/twitter-failure-child-pornography\">documented<\/a> for more than a decade.<\/p>\n<p>Last summer, Twitter claimed that the company aggressively fights online child sexual abuse; however, a Twitter Red Team report from an Adult Content Monetization project found that although the platform invested in technologies to detect and manage the issue, \u201cgrowth has not.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTwitter cannot accurately detect child sexual exploitation and non-consensual nudity at scale,\u201d the Red Team concluded in April 2022, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/23327809\/twitter-onlyfans-child-sexual-content-problem-elon-musk\">The Verge<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Last year, 86,666 CSAM <a href=\"https:\/\/www.missingkids.org\/content\/dam\/missingkids\/pdfs\/2021-reports-by-esp.pdf\">reports<\/a> on Twitter were made to the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children, which plays a key role after Internet sites \u2014 like Twitter \u2014 remove the material. When CSAM is detected and removed, the report goes to the center, which contacts law enforcement for further action.<\/p>\n<p>Twitter also faces two significant lawsuits involving two minor survivors allegedly exploited on that platform. In one case, a video garnered more than 160,000 views and over 2,000 retweets. Yet, Twitter allegedly refused to remove the content, despite the minor survivor requesting its removal while on the brink of suicide.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI found that old Twitter, in many cases related to child sexual abuse material published on the platform by malicious users, instead of suspending the whole account, just removed the tweet,\u201d Stroppa said. \u201cNow Twitter, under Elon Musk\u2019s leadership, directly suspends the accounts.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>For context, one previous <a href=\"https:\/\/timesofindia.indiatimes.com\/business\/india-business\/twitter-bans-over-57k-accounts-for-promoting-child-porn-nudity-in-india\/articleshow\/94589378.cms\">report<\/a> showed the platform removed as many as 57,000 profiles in one month before Musk\u2019s acquisition compared to the 44,000 removed in a single day.<\/p>\n<p>Musk and former CEO Jack Dorsey interacted publicly on the platform late last week over the reported lack of action that the company took against removing material from the site.<\/p>\n<p>Dorsey responded to Musk, claiming the allegations were false.<\/p>\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">No, it is not. <\/p>\n<p>When Ella Irwin, who now runs Trust &#038; Safety, joined Twitter earlier this year, almost no one was working on child safety.<\/p>\n<p>She raised this with Ned &#038; Parag, but they rejected her staffing request.<\/p>\n<p>I made it top priority immediately.<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/ellagirwin?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@ellagirwin<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Elon Musk (@elonmusk) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/elonmusk\/status\/1601313922501353472?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">December 9, 2022<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Musk\u2019s new head of Trust &#038; Safety, Ella Irwin, responded to Dorsey, \u201cI wish this was false but my experience this year supports [what Musk said].\u201d She then claimed that she had tried to get funding to replace employees who had left earlier this year \u201cand was told no.\u201d<\/p>\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">I wish this was false but my experience this year supports this. Company took away my access to email or I would.<\/p>\n<p>\u2014 jack (@jack) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/jack\/status\/1601333939985006592?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">December 9, 2022<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Eliza Bleu, a survivor advocate of those affected by human trafficking, has been speaking out against CSAM on Twitter since shortly after joining the platform in 2019.<\/p>\n<p>On Friday, Bleu co-hosted a Twitter space with crypto stock trader Tara Bull featuring a group interview of Musk, Irwin, and Stroppa.<\/p>\n<p>Irwin said she \u201cwas shocked to find that there were such gaping holes in some of these really critical areas like, for example, child safety.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Irwin, who joined the company in June, said she could only speak to the data set for this year.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI can\u2019t speak to the last five years at Twitter,\u201d Irwin said. \u201cSo certainly, multiple statements could be true here.
