Kyrsten Sinema leaves the Democratic Party to become an independent, several eyes are turning to Sen. Joe Manchin (D-WV) to see if he\u2019ll do the same \u2014 possibly <a class=\"Link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/campaigns\/democrats-face-tough-battle-2024-senate-majority?_amp=true\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">upending the balance of power<\/a> in the Senate for the next Congress. <\/p>\n<p>Over the last two years, Sinema and Manchin have <a class=\"Link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/senate\/manchin-sinema-could-lose-senate-power\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">held an outsize influence<\/a> in the 50-50 Senate as Democrats have needed both their votes to advance their agenda. The pair have often acted as gatekeepers of sorts by using their votes to negotiate and boost their own priorities in exchange for support on a Democratic bill. <\/p>\n<p><b><a class=\"Link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/campaigns\/democrats-face-tough-battle-2024-senate-majority?_amp=true\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">DEMOCRATS FACE UPHILL BATTLE TO MAINTAIN SENATE MAJORITY IN 2024<\/a><\/b> <\/p>\n<p>With Sinema\u2019s grand exit from the party, many are beginning to question whether Manchin will follow her out the door \u2014 with several opining there\u2019s little chance he\u2019ll leave the party he\u2019s represented for decades. <\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Joe Manchin has served in elected office going back to 1982. That&#8217;s 40 years of running and winning as a member of the Democratic Party in West Virginia,&#8221; one Democratic strategist <a class=\"Link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/politics\/joe-manchin-next-strategists-west-virginian-isnt-leave-democratic-party\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">told Fox News<\/a>. &#8220;The senator has been successful because of his personal brand and the trust he\u2019s built with voters over four decades, not because of the party label next to his name.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>Manchin is especially not likely to abandon his party to join the GOP, other strategists told the outlet, despite his routine pushback to President Joe Biden\u2019s agenda. Other prominent Republicans have weighed in on whether the West Virginia Democrat is poised to join their party, noting Manchin would \u201cnever\u201d venture that far to the right. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019ve known Joe Manchin for a long time, he was my mentor governor when I got elected in 2009. He\u2019s never going to be a Republican in my view,\u201d former New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie <a class=\"Link\" href=\"https:\/\/thehill.com\/homenews\/senate\/3770795-chris-christie-says-joe-manchin-will-never-be-a-republican\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">told ABC<\/a>. \u201cHe\u2019s a different kind of Democrat than the Washington Democrats today, but he also showed that six years ago he\u2019s a very formidable candidate as a Democrat in a state that Donald Trump won by 40 points.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>Sinema\u2019s exit comes before both she and Manchin are up for reelection in 2024, with both senators considered to be particularly vulnerable and top targets for the GOP. The West Virginia Democrat later <a class=\"Link\" href=\"https:\/\/thehill.com\/homenews\/senate\/577623-manchin-on-party-switch-its-bull\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">brushed those rumors off <\/a>as \u201cbulls***.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy guess is that Joe Manchin will just continue to be Joe Manchin,\u201d Christie said. \u201cAnd he thinks that if he wants to run for reelection that that\u2019s going to be good enough for him to beat any Republican that we put up anyway.
