But every time I brought up gender issues, the table got quiet. They looked at their plates, or at each other. At one point, I mentioned that puberty blockers followed by cross-sex hormones in adolescents\u2014the pathway of \u201cgender-affirming care\u201d\u2014are likely to\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/31380227\/\">cause sterility<\/a>. My friend said: \u201cI don\u2019t want to know.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>And perhaps that\u2019s how we on the Left got here.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>I know that part of their refusal to even look at me is the way I deliver this information in person: I get worked up. I get defiant. I cannot summon an even-handed or curious tone. Part of it, though, is likely their sense that my statements are rooted not in science or concern about children\u2019s welfare, but in bigotry. They believe this is a political issue, not a health care issue. They replied vaguely about understanding the whole child, and how much distress they were in.<\/p>\n<p>But last year, I discovered that research does offer some illumination. According to\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/29535563\/\">11 studies<\/a>, the vast majority of children with gender dysphoria\u00a0will overcome their angst by the end of puberty \u2014 if they don\u2019t socially transition to adopt a different gender identity. I knew their stories well from my years of reporting and from the media outlets that relentlessly repeated the dogma that these interventions were\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.scientificamerican.com\/article\/what-the-science-on-gender-affirming-care-for-transgender-kids-really-shows\/\">medically necessary<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2022\/03\/04\/opinion\/trans-laws-doctors-healthcare.html\">life-saving<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>But the science doesn\u2019t support those statements, and neither do many of the experiences of young people and their families that I\u2019ve heard in the last year-and-a-half once I was ready and willing to listen to what the mainstream media deliberately ignores.<\/p>\n<p>Last year, I spoke to a mother of a \u201cfeminine\u201d son who thought he was gay. She told me how online communities convinced him he was really a girl and should transition.\u00a0<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/12\/tomboy.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"678\" height=\"1024\" src=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/12\/tomboy.jpg?w=678\" alt=\"While writing her book \" Tomboy \/><\/a><figcaption>While writing her book \u201cTomboy,\u201d the author began to learn more about the silence around teens and transgender issues. <\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cPeople communicating with my son were saying basically, \u2018This is the promised land,\u2019\u201d she told me.<\/p>\n<p>Sometimes these misdiagnosed kids are told \u2014 by clinicians \u2014 that they\u2019ll kill themselves if they don\u2019t transition, despite the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/link.springer.com\/article\/10.1007\/s10508-022-02287-7\">flimsy evidence<\/a>\u00a0for such claims.\u00a0One adolescent was on a\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/unherd.com\/2022\/08\/how-to-treat-gender-dysphoria\/\">feeding tube<\/a>\u00a0because of anorexia when the attending psychologist told him this.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Parents told me of\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/lisaselindavis.substack.com\/p\/parents-are-being-investigated-for?s=w\">being investigated<\/a>\u00a0by Child Protective Services for not properly affirming their children. I feel like I\u2019m being asked to live in a lie.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>An adolescent girl with a history of eating disorders and depression seized on the idea of being transgender when she got to college and felt disconnected from the other girls. Within months, she\u2019d gone on testosterone and had her breasts removed in 2016. \u201cI never even made eye contact with my surgeon,\u201d she told me last month. It took her six years to realize she\u2019d made a mistake, her singing voice ruined, her body forever altered.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>She\u2019s joined the growing ranks of\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.reddit.com\/r\/detrans\/\">detransitioners<\/a>,\u00a0many of whom belong to a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/journals.plos.org\/plosone\/article?id=10.1371\/journal.pone.0202330\">new cohort<\/a>\u00a0of teen girls with complex mental health problems, often influenced by social media. Such kids were not studied in the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/20646177\/\">original research<\/a>\u00a0suggesting adolescent sex changes can be psychologically beneficial. It\u2019s a cohort the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/commentisfree\/2018\/oct\/22\/rapid-onset-gender-dysphoria-is-a-poisonous-lie-used-to-discredit-trans-people\">Left-leaning media<\/a>\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.them.us\/story\/a-new-study-debunks-the-myth-that-kids-become-trans-through-social-contagion\">denies exist<\/a>s, just as they downplay detransition and overstate the surety of benefits of gender-affirming care.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/12\/keira-bell2.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"682\" height=\"1024\" src=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/12\/keira-bell2.jpg?w=682\" alt=\"Bell during after her initial transition from female to male; England has recently made it harder for teens to access medical treatments for gender dysphoria.\" class=\"wp-image-24912524\" srcset=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/12\/keira-bell2.jpg?quality=75&#038;strip=all&#038;w=1023 1023w, https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/12\/keira-bell2.jpg?quality=75&#038;strip=all&#038;w=682 682w, https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/12\/keira-bell2.jpg?quality=75&#038;strip=all&#038;w=341 341w, https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/12\/keira-bell2.jpg?quality=75&#038;strip=all 1024w\" \/><\/a><figcaption>Bell during after her initial transition from female to male; England has recently made it harder for teens to access medical treatments for gender dysphoria. <\/figcaption><figcaption><span class=\"credit\">Persuasion.com<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Though there were two important stories on detranstioners, in\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.thestranger.com\/features\/2017\/06\/28\/25252342\/the-detransitioners-they-were-transgender-until-they-werent\">2017<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theatlantic.com\/magazine\/archive\/2018\/07\/when-a-child-says-shes-trans\/561749\/\">2018<\/a>, along with my own op-ed in The New York Times in 2017 about confusing\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2017\/04\/18\/opinion\/my-daughter-is-not-transgender-shes-a-tomboy.html\">gender nonconformity<\/a>\u00a0with transgender identity, the media seemed to retreat from proper exploration of this complex following the backlash to those pieces.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>For the past year-and-a-half, I\u2019ve pitched stories to The New York Times, The Washington Post, CNN, USA Today, Time and many others about detransitioners and how the science of gender-affirming care actually\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.tandfonline.com\/doi\/full\/10.1080\/0092623X.2022.2046221\">doesn\u2019t support<\/a>\u00a0claims that it\u2019s life-saving \u2014 despite assertions by major medical associations. I\u2019ve pointed out that around the world, in countries with better healthcare systems and no profit motive, medical interventions for trans children are being\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/lisaselindavis.substack.com\/p\/letter-from-finland-and-sweden\">slowed down<\/a>\u00a0or doled out only under strict circumstances, because of concern about going too far, too fast.<\/p>\n<p>I managed to\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bostonglobe.com\/2022\/09\/21\/opinion\/kids-gender-we-have-be-able-talk-about-it\/\">publish<\/a>\u00a0a few\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.sfchronicle.com\/opinion\/openforum\/article\/Texas-investigations-into-gender-affirming-care-16975929.php\">dissenting pieces<\/a> in mainstream media, but most people in the media plugged their ears. They, too, didn\u2019t want to know. As a result, the media have helped make gender affirming care a political issue instead of a healthcare issue. They have failed and misinformed their readers. These are baby steps, but I\u2019m grateful for them.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Even so, there\u2019s so much more territory to cover. As a journalist, this has been the most dispiriting vocational experience I\u2019ve ever had. Yet along the way, I met hundreds of amazing people. Those speaking up, or wishing they could, are a diverse group from all over the world, of different religious and political and regional backgrounds, different cultures. There are many gay, lesbian and trans people among them. What they have in common is an appreciation for scientific knowledge, a deep humanity, and an endless well of love for their children.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>I think those on the Left who already know something is wrong will eventually feel safer dissenting and questioning, despite their own media misinforming them. For those of you still saying, \u201cI don\u2019t want to know\u201d \u2014 even if you can\u2019t listen to me, please take your blinders off and unplug your ears.
