Does the president?<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s a question people across the country should seriously be asking themselves.<\/p>\n<p>The nation has been gripped by a <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2022\/05\/07\/food-banks-impacted-by-nation-wide-baby-formula-shortage\/\" class=\"suggested-link\">baby-formula shortage<\/a> for nearly a year. What kind of society allows this to go on in the shadows? How is this not a topic of urgency for President Joe Biden? What is the point of anything if a mother can\u2019t feed her child?<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/SenatorHagerty\/status\/1588577944813072384\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Sen. Bill Hagerty (R-Tenn.) tweeted last month<\/a> about the shortages: \u201cRather than delivering divisive speeches designed to demonize everyday Americans, maybe President Biden should focus his attentions on confronting the pressing issues we have here at home.\u201d He\u2019s absolutely right. There is no more pressing issue than American babies getting the food they need.<\/p>\n<p>Now as we head into peak cold and flu season, parents are reporting shortages of children\u2019s medicine, including Tylenol and ibuprofen. <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2022\/11\/23\/us-faces-shortages-of-antibiotics-flu-drugs-amid-tripledemic\/\">Children\u2019s amoxicillin and Augmentin are also scarce<\/a>. Have a child with asthma? The American Society of Health-System Pharmacists, which updates a list of drugs in short supply, says albuterol is limited.<\/p>\n<p>How can this go on in America? How are we talking about anything but this?<\/p>\n<p>Nearly a year ago, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/articles\/baby-formula-is-hard-to-find-brands-and-stores-are-divided-over-why-11641983401\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">The Wall Street Journal reported<\/a> chains like Walmart and CVS said baby-formula \u201cmanufacturers are having supply issues; formula makers say retailers aren\u2019t getting product to stores once it is delivered.\u201d Finally in June, the Biden administration <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2022\/05\/18\/biden-invokes-defense-production-act-for-baby-formula\/\" class=\"suggested-link\">invoked the Defense Production Act<\/a> to address the problem. He also directed various government agencies to use Defense Department aircraft to get formula into the country. Did any of this work? The White House says it\u2019s conducted 10 <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2022\/06\/23\/foreign-baby-formula-shipments-ramping-up-amid-us-shortage\/\" class=\"suggested-link\">\u201cOperation Fly Formula missions\u201d<\/a> and brought in \u201cthe equivalent of 19 million 8-ounce bottles of formula.\u201d And then what? Did the president get lost on the way to the ice-cream shop? Why aren\u2019t we doing this until there is no baby-formula crisis?<\/p>\n<p>This administration\u2019s priorities are completely out of whack. The president announced Thursday he\u2019s sending <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/articles\/biden-administration-awards-36-billion-to-pensions-for-truckers-warehouse-workers-11670532024\">$36 billion to shore up union workers\u2019 pensions<\/a>. Once again, he\u2019s simply sending cash to his base as American parents wonder if they\u2019ll be able to treat their kid\u2019s ear infection. Where is this avalanche of money when it comes to the country\u2019s children?<\/p>\n<p>There\u2019s a lot of talk about why America\u2019s birthrate is in decline. The way we respond to crises that affect children offers a clue. The damage from that political alliance is still reverberating, with record learning losses. Not a single person who made decisions that harmed so many kids has repented. Now the same people are unconcerned whether kids have food or medicine.<\/p>\n<p>It shouldn\u2019t just be up to parents to care. I\u2019m a parent, yes, but I haven\u2019t had a use for baby formula in a great many years, and my children don\u2019t have medication allergies making specific ones all the more important to find. Still I can recall the early hazy days of babyhood and can imagine the frustration and fear parents must feel as they can\u2019t feed their children and no one seems to care.<\/p>\n<p>You don\u2019t have to have kids to understand this desperation. It\u2019s something we used to, as a country, know. Whitney Houston covered \u201cGreatest Love of All\u201d and sang the powerful opener \u201cI believe that children are our future\u201d in 1985, years before she had any. Now we behave as if kids aren\u2019t that important for our society.
