According to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.americanbanker.com\/news\/judges-report-hammers-three-ex-wells-fargo-executives?utm_campaign=amerbanker-tw&#038;utm_content=socialflow&#038;utm_medium=social\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">American Banker<\/a>, which first reported the proposed penalties, attorneys for the former executives claim their clients did nothing wrong and plan to appeal the ruling.<\/p>\n<p>The action is the latest move by regulators to impose penalties on individual former Wells Fargo employees for their alleged involvement in \u2013 or failure to end \u2013 the scheme that grew rampant within the organization when unrealistic sales goals implemented by the bank led to millions of fake accounts being opened without customers&#8217; knowledge and under false pretenses.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxbusiness.com\/markets\/jpmorgan-other-banks-talks-reimburse-scammed-zelle-customers\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>JPMORGAN, OTHER BANKS IN TALKS TO REIMBURSE SCAMMED ZELLE CUSTOMERS<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxbusiness.com\/markets\/wells-fargo-settlement-fake-accounts\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Wells Fargo agreed in 2020<\/a> to pay $3 billion to resolve the issue with the federal government and admitted as part of the settlement that it wrongly collected millions of dollars in fees and interest, harmed the credit ratings of some customers and illegally used customers&#8217; private information.<\/p>\n<div class=\"inline image-ct\">\n<div class=\"m\"><source media=\"(max-width: 767px)\" \/><source media=\"(min-width: 768px) and (max-width: 1023px)\" \/><source media=\"(min-width: 1024px) and (max-width: 1279px)\" \/><source media=\"(min-width: 1280px)\" \/><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/a57.foxnews.com\/static.foxbusiness.com\/foxbusiness.com\/content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/931\/523\/John-Stumpf.jpg?ve=1&#038;tl=1\" alt=\"former wells fargo ceo john stumpf\" \/><\/div>\n<div class=\"caption\">\n<p><span>John Stumpf, then-chief executive officer of Wells Fargo &#038; Co., speaks during a House Financial Services Committee hearing in Washington on Sept. 29, 2016.<\/span><span> (Andrew Harrer\/Bloomberg via Getty Images\/File \/ Getty Images)<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>Prior to the bank&#8217;s settlement, five former Wells Fargo executives were charged in connection to the misconduct, and the bank\u2019s former CEO, John Stumpf, was barred from the banking industry.
