It would be Biden\u2019s choice which one to save. The report was later edited without explanation to mirror Biden\u2019s explanation that only Griner was offered.\u201d<\/p>\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">NBC had a bombshell report that Russia offered America Brittney Griner OR Paul Whelan, citing a senior government official. It would be Biden&#8217;s choice which one to save.<\/p>\n<p>The report was later edited without explanation to mirror Biden&#8217;s explanation that only Griner was offered. <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/5BvGeyP0RU\">pic.twitter.com\/5BvGeyP0RU<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 David Hookstead (@dhookstead) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/dhookstead\/status\/1601255872365461504?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">December 9, 2022<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Both the original and the edited stories noted that Russia was willing to make a trade for convicted international arms dealer Viktor Bout, who has served 11 years of his 25-year sentence.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut the official said Russia has treated Whelan differently because he is an accused spy, and that the Kremlin gave the White House the choice of either Griner or Whelan \u2014 or none,\u201d the text of the original story read.<\/p>\n<p>But the corrected copy offered a slight alteration, stating that Russian officials had only offered a deal for Griner, saying, \u201cBut the official said Russia has treated Whelan differently because he is accused of spying and that the Kremlin ultimately gave the White House the choice of Griner or no one after different options were proposed.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The article included a correction, adding, \u201can earlier version of this article misstated the choice the Biden administration was given over hostages. It was to swap for Griner or no one, not a choice between Griner or Whelan.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The revised copy mirrored the White House\u2019s claims almost exactly. After Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre highlighted <a href=\"https:\/\/dailywire.com\/news\/kjp-gushes-over-griners-release-an-important-role-model-for-lgbtqi-americans-and-women-of-color\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">all the reasons<\/a> it was great that Griner was coming home \u2014 namely that she was \u201cmore than an athlete, more than an Olympian, she is an important role model and inspiration to millions of Americans, particularly the LGBTQI+ Americans and women of color\u201d \u2014 she told reporters, \u201cunfortunately, the choice\u00a0became to either bring Brittney home or no one.\u201d<\/p>\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Karine Jean-Pierre on why the White House was able to bring WNBA player Brittney Griner home but not former U.S. Marine Paul Whelan:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cUnfortunately, the choice\u00a0became to either bring Brittney home or no one.\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/KTUcWCHfmZ\">pic.twitter.com\/KTUcWCHfmZ<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Townhall.com (@townhallcom) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/townhallcom\/status\/1600928310640676866?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">December 8, 2022<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Former National Security Advisor John Bolton cast additional doubt on the Biden administration\u2019s claim when he said that the Kremlin had previously offered Whelan as part of a one-for-one swap for Bout. He explained at the time that then-President Donald Trump had turned down the deal \u2014 and excoriated Biden for taking it.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe possibility of a Bout-for-Whelan trade existed back then and it wasn\u2019t made, for very good reasons having to deal with Viktor Bout,\u201d Bolton said during a <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2022\/12\/08\/trump-turned-down-viktor-bout-for-paul-whelan-prisoner-swap-john-bolton\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">CBS interview<\/a>, adding that he saw the final deal \u2014 Bout for Griner \u2014 as a \u201cvery bad mistake.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is not a deal. This is not a swap. This is a surrender. And terrorists and rogue states all around the world will take note of this, and it endangers other Americans in the future who can be grabbed and used as bargaining chips by people who don\u2019t have the same morals and scruples that we do,\u201d Bolton said. \u201cThere are occasions when you swap spies. Obviously, there are legitimate exchanges of prisoners of war. But this doesn\u2019t even approximate that. The idea that somehow what Brittney Griner did \u2014 very foolishly, in my estimate \u2014 but that whatever she did compares to Viktor Bout is something that shows just how desperate the administration was to make this deal.
