Jean-Pierre repeatedly answered that the administration was \u201cnot involved\u201d with decisions to censor users.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s up to private companies to make these type[s] of decisions,\u201d she insisted, according to a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxbusiness.com\/politics\/white-house-denies-involvement-twitter-censorship-direct-contact-covid-misinformation\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">report<\/a> from Fox Business. \u201cWe were not involved. I can say that we were not involved.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The description of the administration\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/psaki-if-you-post-misinformation-online-you-should-be-banned-from-all-social-media-platforms\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">involvement<\/a> with content moderation differs from the summary provided as recently as last year by former White House Press Secretary Jen Psaki, who said that officials were in \u201cregular touch with social media platforms\u201d to make them aware of \u201cthe latest narratives dangerous to public health.\u201d She asserted that no proponent of \u201cmisinformation\u201d should be banned from one major platform and not others.<\/p>\n<p>The release of the initial installment of the Twitter Files, which recount the social media platform\u2019s censorship efforts before Elon Musk recently acquired the company, was reportedly <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/the-twitter-files-compromised-after-lawyer-involved-in-the-controversy-was-behind-vetting-the-files\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">compromised<\/a> last week after reporter Matt Taibbi revealed that Baker vetted the files without the knowledge of new management before sending them to journalists, even though he had been embroiled in the censorship controversy himself.<\/p>\n<p>Baker\u2019s decision to vet the files ultimately triggered his ouster and the delay of the second installment of the Twitter Files. \u201cIn light of concerns about Baker\u2019s possible role in suppression of information important to the public dialogue, he was exited from Twitter today,\u201d Musk said.<\/p>\n<p>Baker, who teaches at Harvard Law School and formerly served as a Brookings Institution visiting fellow, had encouraged the social media company to suppress the New York Post\u2019s report on Hunter Biden\u2019s laptop ahead of the 2020 election. The attorney was the subject of a criminal investigation five years ago over allegations that he made unauthorized leaks to the media; the probe ended with no charges.<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/musk-releases-hunter-biden-files-tweets-deleted-at-behest-of-team-biden-exec-was-key-behind-censorship-decision\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">first edition<\/a> of the Twitter Files showed that Biden campaign officials routinely asked executives to remove posts, often from the accounts of prominent conservatives critical of the then-Democratic presidential nominee. \u201cBy 2020, requests from connected actors to delete tweets were routine,\u201d Taibbi wrote. \u201cOne executive would write to another: \u2018More to review from the Biden team.\u2019 The reply would come back: \u2018Handled.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/twitters-underhanded-actions-targeting-libs-of-tiktok-revealed-in-new-twitter-files-release\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">second edition<\/a> of the Twitter Files, shared by journalist Bari Weiss on Thursday evening, revealed that the social media company built blacklists, prevented disfavored tweets from trending on the platform, and actively limited the visibility of entire accounts and trending topics without telling users. Former company bosses such as founder Jack Dorsey, chief executive Parag Agrawal, and head of legal Vijaya Gadde collaborated to censor multiple popular conservative accounts. The latter two executives were recently dismissed by Musk.<\/p>\n<p>For years, however, Twitter executives had repeatedly claimed that no such censorship had occurred. \u201cPeople are asking us if we shadow ban. We do not,\u201d a blog <a href=\"https:\/\/blog.twitter.com\/en_us\/topics\/company\/2018\/Setting-the-record-straight-on-shadow-banning\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">post<\/a> from 2018 co-authored by Gadde herself said.
