After the release of the second iteration of the Twitter Files, the world learned that those outlets had been thoroughly duped, even as they sneered at conservatives for bemoaning the evident <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/topic\/social-media-censorship\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">censorship<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Journalist Bari Weiss <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/twitters-underhanded-actions-targeting-libs-of-tiktok-revealed-in-new-twitter-files-release\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">shared<\/a> on Thursday evening that the social media company built blacklists, prevented disfavored tweets from trending on the platform, and actively limited the visibility of entire accounts and even trending topics without telling users. Former company bosses such as founder Jack Dorsey, chief executive Parag Agrawal, and head of legal Vijaya Gadde collaborated to censor multiple popular conservative accounts. The latter two executives were dismissed after <a href=\"http:\/\/dailywire.com\/topic\/elon-musk\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Elon Musk<\/a> took over the company several weeks ago.<\/p>\n<p>For years, however, Twitter executives had insisted that no such censorship had taken place. \u201cPeople are asking us if we shadow ban. We do not,\u201d a blog <a href=\"https:\/\/blog.twitter.com\/en_us\/topics\/company\/2018\/Setting-the-record-straight-on-shadow-banning\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">post<\/a> from 2018 co-authored by Gadde herself claimed. Dorsey answered with a simple \u201cNo\u201d when <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/jack\/status\/1316537705023578115\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">asked<\/a> by commentator Dave Rubin in 2020 whether the company shadow bans \u201cbased on political beliefs.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The only entities which spread the outright lie more fervently than Twitter itself were legacy media outlets.<\/p>\n<p>The New York Times claimed in a 2018 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2018\/07\/26\/us\/politics\/twitter-shadowbanning.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">article<\/a> that the controversy over shadow banning was based on semantics, insisting that the practice only refers to algorithmically shutting down traffic due to the content on a given page. \u201cIs Twitter shadow banning Republicans? No, it is not,\u201d correspondent Liam Stack declared in reaction to an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vice.com\/en\/article\/43paqq\/twitter-is-shadow-banning-prominent-republicans-like-the-rnc-chair-and-trump-jrs-spokesman\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">article<\/a> from Vice News which found that the platform limited search results when users looked for prominent conservatives on the platform. The Gray Lady then amplified a statement from Twitter provided to Vice \u2014 \u201cAs we have said before, we do not \u2018shadowban\u2019\u201d \u2014 and mocked Republicans such as RNC Chair Ronna McDaniel and Rep. Jim Jordan (R-OH) for feeling \u201cvindicated\u201d by the report.<\/p>\n<p>The agent of the suppression was not an impersonal algorithm, but zealously censorious executives. Weiss found that some accounts, such as the one belonging to talk show host Dan Bongino, were <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/bariweiss\/status\/1601007575633305600\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">slapped<\/a> with a \u201csearch blacklist.\u201d Twitter likewise placed a \u201cdo not amplify\u201d directive on the account of conservative activist and Turning Point USA founder Charlie Kirk. Weiss determined that Twitter executives had also been playing semantic games, preferring the term \u201cvisibility filtering\u201d to the more widespread term \u201cshadow ban.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, a similar <a href=\"https:\/\/abcnews.go.com\/Technology\/twitter-denies-conservative-shadow-banning-claims-alters-search\/story?id=56841398\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">article<\/a> from ABC News said that \u201cPresident Donald Trump seized upon the claim and contended that such a move constitutes illegal discrimination, even as the company and digital experts defended the platform and pointed to faults and misunderstandings in the story.\u201d A third <a href=\"https:\/\/nymag.com\/intelligencer\/2018\/07\/twitter-is-not-shadow-banning-republicans.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">piece<\/a> from Intelligencer \u2014 simply entitled \u201cTwitter Is Not \u2018Shadow Banning\u2019 Republicans\u201d \u2014 argued that the notion of the shadow ban \u201chas persisted among the conspiracy-minded, as a great weapon of censorship, generally thought to be perpetrated by liberal Silicon Valley operatives at the expense of conservatives.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Another <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/2018\/7\/27\/17620194\/twitter-shadow-ban-trump-conservatives-search-results\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">article<\/a> from The Verge contributing editor Casey Newton explicitly advised Twitter to \u201cignore the phony outrage\u201d over shadow banning. \u201cA consequence of covering the intersection of social media and democracy is that sometimes you wind up having to discuss things that are very dumb,\u201d he wrote. \u201cAnd yet how Twitter reacts to the attendant criticism could determine whether the company ever gets a handle on the abuse its platform is so well known for.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>An <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2019\/03\/22\/tech\/twitter-algorithm-political-rhetoric\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">analysis<\/a> from CNN Business published in 2019 whined that Twitter had even increased the reach of \u201cextreme political rhetoric\u201d from conservative accounts, including Kirk, one of the influencers who was manually targeted by the platform\u2019s executives, as revealed by Weiss.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere is some irony to the amplification of these right-wing voices,\u201d CNN senior media reporter Oliver Darcy wrote. \u201cTrump and other prominent Republicans have long accused Twitter of \u2018shadow banning\u2019 users with conservative viewpoints, an accusation Twitter has strongly denied.
