Raphael Warnock&#8217;s (D., Ga.) victory on Tuesday,\u00a0marks the first time in a century that not a single Senate incumbent lost.<\/p>\n<p>The lawmakers&#8217; historic showing stands in stark contrast with Americans&#8217; sentiments about Congress as a whole: Only <a href=\"https:\/\/news.gallup.com\/poll\/1600\/congress-public.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">21 percent<\/a> of Americans approve of Congress, Gallup reported in October. That rating has not risen above 40 percent since 2005.<\/p>\n<p>Seventy-four percent of Americans, meanwhile, say the country is headed in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/meet-the-press\/first-read\/nbc-news-poll-57-voters-say-investigations-trump-continue-rcna43989\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">wrong direction<\/a>, according to an August NBC poll. Fifty-eight percent of those polled said they are &#8220;more worried that America&#8217;s best years may already be behind us.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The victories, in the face of widespread dissatisfaction with Washington, show the value of incumbency as challengers often confront significant disadvantages in fundraising and name recognition. The results also suggest voters blame the other 98 senators over their own.<\/p>\n<p>In some of the closest watched Senate races\u2014Arizona, Georgia, Nevada, New Hampshire, Alaska, and Wisconsin\u2014incumbents outraised their opponents by large margins. In Arizona, Sen. Mark Kelly (D.) <a href=\"https:\/\/www.azcentral.com\/story\/news\/politics\/arizona\/2022\/11\/15\/blake-masters-concedes-mark-kelly-ending-arizona-senate-race\/10703708002\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">outspent<\/a> Republican Blake Masters by $70 million. Sen. Catherine Cortez Masto (D., Nev.), meanwhile, beat opponent Adam Laxalt by more than <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/politics\/2022-election\/adam-laxalt-concedes-nevada-race-tipped-balance-senate-rcna57282\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">$12 million<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>While Democratic opponent Mandela Barnes out-fundraised Sen. Ron Johnson (R., Wis.) in direct donations, pro-Johnson PACs <a href=\"https:\/\/thebadgerproject.org\/2022\/11\/07\/barnes-slightly-outraising-incumbent-johnson-in-direct-donations-but-badly-losing-in-outside-spending\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">spent<\/a> $30 million more than pro-Barnes organizations.<\/p>\n<p>The cash disadvantages made it more difficult for challengers to overcome incumbents&#8217; positive approval ratings in their respective states. Heading into Election Day, Kelly and Cortez Masto had a +4 net approval, Warnock had +5, Sen. Maggie Hassan (D., N.H.) had +10, and Sen. Lisa Murkowski (R., Alaska) had 0, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/fivethirtyeight.com\/features\/how-every-senator-and-governor-ranks-according-to-popularity-above-replacement\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">polling<\/a> from <em>FiveThirtyEight<\/em>. Only Johnson, who won reelection by 1 point, had a negative approval rating at -14.<\/p>\n<p>Masters, Laxalt, and Georgia Republican candidate Herschel Walker, meanwhile, all had negative net approval ratings.<\/p>\n<p>Name recognition and cash may have helped incumbents win this cycle, but the 2024 map is more challenging. Three Democratic incumbents are up for reelection in states that voted for former president Donald Trump by more than 8 points: Sens.
