The book\u2019s <\/span><span>description<\/span><span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/I-Am-Jazz-Jessica-Herthel\/dp\/0803741073\/ref=sxin_10_mbs_w_global_sims?content-id=amzn1.sym.167d0880-9da0-400b-938e-4382731a4102%3Aamzn1.sym.167d0880-9da0-400b-938e-4382731a4102&#038;cv_ct_cx=my+princess+boy&#038;gclid=Cj0KCQiAkMGcBhCSARIsAIW6d0CmpC7nFIjnVNyoC-tooDItUQGjwwtZ8MgVpjAkZEDMpEzXpYAd3tUaAi3qEALw_wcB&#038;hvadid=241621375349&#038;hvdev=c&#038;hvlocphy=9013193&#038;hvnetw=g&#038;hvqmt=e&#038;hvrand=7947014317611997556&#038;hvtargid=kwd-22710004779&#038;keywords=my+princess+boy&#038;pd_rd_i=0803741073&#038;pd_rd_r=5bdec277-4e09-4547-81ec-c1b3267e65bb&#038;pd_rd_w=kL7MB&#038;pd_rd_wg=mZH2w&#038;pf_rd_p=167d0880-9da0-400b-938e-4382731a4102&#038;pf_rd_r=EY3G8PE98PZ7Q0DSJFFQ&#038;qid=1670459206&#038;sr=1-2-9e7645f9-2d19-4bff-863e-f6cdbe50f990&#038;tag=googhydr-20\"> reads<\/a> \u201c<\/span><span>From the time she was two years old, Jazz knew that she had a girl\u2019s brain in a boy\u2019s body.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>The corresponding <\/span><span>lesson plan<\/span><span><a href=\"https:\/\/mysps.seattleschools.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/11\/4thGradeIAmJazzLessonPlanADA.pdf\"> says<\/a> that \u201cby the end of the lesson\u201d the fourth graders will \u201cdefine transgender and explore an example of gender identity.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"a8d-pre\"><span>The lesson also has a \u201cwriting activity\u201d portion, where students are told to \u201cwrite a letter to Jazz telling her what you think she should do.\u201d Children are asked, for example, \u201cshould she continue to wear girls\u2019 clothes because that\u2019s what makes her comfortable or wear boys\u2019 clothes because that\u2019s what society expects?\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"D-ROS-B2\" class=\"a8d\"><\/figure>\n<figure id=\"M-ROS-B2\" class=\"a8d\"><\/figure>\n<p><span>Another note tells children to \u201cTell her what you will do to help,\u201d while another discusses how Jazz should respond to bullying.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>The lesson is deemed successful if students \u201cunderstand transgender and identify an example of gender diversity,\u201d \u201cidentify what it means to be an ally and accept differences,\u201d and \u201cwrite the meaning of transgender and ally.\u201d The lesson plan also says that it was adapted from the \u201cStudent, Family, and Community Support Department\u201d of the San Francisco Unified School District.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>But this is just one of many gender identity lesson plans from SPS. One of the several videos featured Health Education Specialist Brennon Ham reading \u201cJacob\u2019s New Dress,\u201d a book about a young boy who wants to go to school wearing a dress. The book is <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Jacobs-New-Dress-Sarah-Hoffman\/dp\/0807563757\/ref=sr_1_1?crid=1XKME5CGPY5TT&#038;keywords=jacobs+new+dress+book&#038;qid=1670458134&#038;sprefix=jacobs+new+dress%2Caps%2C170&#038;sr=8-1\"><span>described<\/span><\/a><span> on Amazon as <\/span><span>\u201cAn affirming story about gender nonconformity.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cThis heartwarming story speaks to the unique challenges faced by children who don\u2019t identify with traditional gender roles,\u201d it adds.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"a8d-pre\"><span>The video, which was intended for children in the second grade, was <a href=\"https:\/\/mysps.seattleschools.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/12\/2nd-grade-Jacobs-New-Dress-lesson-plan-FINAL-ADA.pdf\">paired<\/a> with a <\/span><span>lesson plan<\/span><span> for teachers. The lesson plan reads \u201cSome kids at school say he can\u2019t wear \u2018girl\u2019 clothes, but Jacob wants to wear a dress to school.\u201d It goes on to ask \u201cCan he convince his parents to let him wear what he wants?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"M-ROS-B3\" class=\"a8d adSo\"><\/figure>\n<p><span>The lesson plan intends to teach children that \u201cthere is a range of gender expression\u201d and \u201chow to be an ally.\u201d Teachers are told to say \u201cWhile we are reading today, I want you on the lookout for an ally.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Exit questions include \u201cwhy is it important to be an ally and treat people with respect about their gender choices?\u201d as well as \u201cList three things you can do to be a better ally at school for all students to feel safe, supported, and accepted?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>At one point in the video, Health Education Specialist Brennon Ham criticizes Jacob\u2019s mom, who doesn\u2019t readily allow her son to go to school in a dress. His mom \u201cis not really showing acceptance\u201d or \u201cshowing allyship,\u201d Ham says.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"video-src-attr\">seattleschools.org<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Another plan, intended for kindergarteners, centers around a book called \u201cIntroducing Teddy.\u201d The book\u2019s <\/span><span>description<\/span><span><a href=\"https:\/\/mysps.seattleschools.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/11\/0-Kindergarten-Introducing-Teddy-lesson-plan-FINAL-ADA.pdf\"> explains<\/a> that the teddy bear, named Thomas, says \u201cIn my heart, I\u2019ve always known that I\u2019m a girl teddy, not a boy teddy.
