Vanguard <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/vanguard-drops-out-of-climate-initiative-as-reaction-against-woke-investing-continues\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">opted to withdraw<\/a> from the project in order to \u201cprovide the clarity our investors desire about the role of index funds and about how we think about material risks, including climate-related risks,\u201d according to a <a href=\"https:\/\/corporate.vanguard.com\/content\/corporatesite\/us\/en\/corp\/articles\/update-on-nzam-engagement.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">statement<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Gore remarked in an interview that the move from Vanguard was \u201cextremely disappointing,\u201d as well as \u201cirresponsible and shortsighted,\u201d according to a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2022-12-08\/al-gore-rips-into-vanguard-after-defection-from-climate-group\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">report<\/a> from Bloomberg. The Nobel Peace Prize winner and \u201cAn Inconvenient Truth\u201d documentary maker added that he sees \u201ca real, growing commitment\u201d among executives to fight climate change.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cUnfortunately, it\u2019s not everywhere,\u201d he said. \u201cThe leadership of Vanguard isn\u2019t a part of it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The pivot from Vanguard occurred hours after lawmakers in the state of Texas <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/texas-subpoenas-schedules-hearing-for-blackrock-playing-politics-using-texans-hard-earned-money\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">announced<\/a> a hearing over asset managers\u2019 alleged mismanagement of taxpayer dollars driven by ideological motives. Several attorneys general <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/state-attorneys-general-move-to-block-vanguards-climate-crusade-from-impacting-public-power-grids\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">filed motions<\/a> last week with the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission arguing that Vanguard should be barred from purchasing shares in publicly traded utilities out of a concern that the company\u2019s emissions reduction efforts would raise energy prices and decrease grid reliability.<\/p>\n<p>Despite the backlash, Vanguard asserted that investors should be worried about financial risks posed by the environment. \u201cClimate change, and the ongoing global response, will have far-reaching economic consequences for companies, financial markets, and investors, presenting a clear example of a material and multifaceted financial risk,\u201d the company\u2019s statement continued. \u201cVanguard has been taking steps to understand and attend to this risk to investors\u2019 returns, including through our engagements with portfolio companies, policymakers, and broader industry efforts.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Gore, who narrowly lost the 2000 election to former President George W. Bush, recently made headlines as a possible Biden administration <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/biden-may-try-to-fire-world-bank-president-for-not-pushing-climate-policy-enough-possible-replacement-chimes-in-report\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">appointee<\/a> to lead the World Bank; the former Tennessee senator has labeled current World Bank President David Malpass, an appointee of former President Donald Trump, a climate change \u201cdenier.\u201d A spokesperson for Gore said that the official \u201cstrongly believes that there needs to be new leadership at the World Bank, but has no intention of pursuing the role himself and would not accept it if offered.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Gore now leads Generation Investment Management, which <a href=\"https:\/\/www.generationim.com\/our-firm\/our-mission\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">pushes<\/a> for a \u201cjust and inclusive\u201d transition to renewable energy and net zero emissions while boycotting fossil fuel companies. The firm considers climate change an \u201cinseparable part of our fiduciary responsibility.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Beyond efforts from Republican lawmakers, the move from Vanguard to reverse its commitment to the Net Zero Asset Managers project occurs as evidence of a broader market backlash against the environmental, social, and governance movement, also known as ESG, continues to mount.<\/p>\n<p>An <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/poll-by-two-to-one-margin-investors-reject-woke-companies-pushing-political-causes\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">exclusive poll<\/a> from The Daily Wire showed earlier this year that 64% of respondents believe \u201cindividual investors whose savings are being invested\u201d should decide whether retirement and pension funds are allocated according to ESG standards, while 20% believe that \u201cWall Street asset managers\u201d should make such decisions.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Former Vice President Al Gore lambasted Vanguard following the company\u2019s decision to sever ties with the Net Zero Asset Managers initiative on Wednesday.
