A lot of the bullying focused on his Korean American heritage, and one assault even left the young boy with a ruptured eardrum, they said.<\/p>\n<p>Last month, Chumchal\u00a0filed a public records request with the school district for the number of bullying, incident, assault, police, and grievance reports filed in Joshua Independent between 2015 and 2022. Lawyers for the district responded that this information would cost a whopping $7,111.12.<\/p>\n<p>The district <a href=\"https:\/\/www.goldwaterinstitute.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/2022-12-02-Submitted-Attorney-General-Complaint.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">claimed<\/a> that it will have to manually retrieve all 6,636 pages of bullying and other incident reports and manually redact all confidential information since it\u00a0does not have any \u201cexisting documents reflecting a total number\u201d or \u201cthe resources to run a search for reports automatically.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>However, the mom simply wanted to find out the number of bullying reports and was not seeking to view the content of the reports, so redactions are unnecessary, her attorney argued.<\/p>\n<p>Last week, Chumchal\u2019s attorney Warren Norred filed an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.goldwaterinstitute.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/2022-12-02-Submitted-Attorney-General-Complaint.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">appeal<\/a> with the Texas Attorney General\u2019s Office challenging the district\u2019s high fee. Norred is volunteering his services with the\u00a0conservative\u00a0Goldwater Institute, which is helping the family challenge the district\u2019s fee.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cParents shouldn\u2019t have to pay thousands of dollars just to access simple information about what\u2019s happening in their children\u2019s schools,\u201d Norred said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTexas law is clear on the matter \u2014 and I intend to fight this excessive public records fee and defend Terrie\u2019s right to access public information,\u201d the attorney added.<\/p>\n<p>The mom said the ordeal has taken a toll on her family, but she is hopeful.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen you start seeing the pattern here, it appears the district is discouraging people from asking for information. If the sort of cruel, horrific bullying that my son has been a victim of is a widespread issue, don\u2019t parents deserve to know about it?\u201d Chumchal told The Daily Wire.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur experience has been painful and stressful for our family. I hope my sharing will strengthen others to stand up and fight for their rights. Retaliation is real, and that\u2019s what keeps parents silent. But I am hopeful that by standing up, things can change, and other children and families won\u2019t have to suffer,\u201d the mom said.<\/p>\n<p>Other districts have charged parents similarly eye-popping amounts of money for public records reports.<\/p>\n<p>In August, the\u00a0nearby Fort Worth Independent School District <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/fort-worth-parents-charged-over-1200-to-see-curriculum-book-lists\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">charged<\/a> parents nearly $1,300 to see the public school district\u2019s K-12 curriculum book lists.\u00a0One mom,\u00a0who is an attorney, filed a complaint over the charge.<\/p>\n<p>Similarly, a Rhode Island mom was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/parents-not-welcome-rhode-island-mom-sues-school-district-over-secret-meetings\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">told<\/a> by her kindergarten daughter\u2019s school district that the public records she requested on the curriculum would cost $74,000. She was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/stay-at-home-mom-sued-by-nations-largest-teachers-union-after-investigating-crt\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">sued<\/a> by the largest teachers\u2019 union in the country, which sought to block her numerous requests for public records.<\/p>\n<p>Over the last two years, frustrated parents across the country have gone head-to-head with public school districts on a litany of issues, including inappropriate curriculum content and school safety, sometimes giving school boards a piece of their mind at school board meetings.<\/p>\n<p>The Joshua Independent School District did not respond to a request for comment.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A Texas school district is demanding parents fork over more than $7,000 for public records about bullying in the district.
