But most of the doctors involved in these practices must be getting their \u201cguidance\u201d from somewhere, right? As it turns out, these dubious and dangerous practices involving everything from hormone injections and puberty blockers to genital mutilation surgery have all been endorsed by one of the nation\u2019s largest medical associations. That would be the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP). This week, the Washington Free Beacon, in partnership with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.commonsense.news\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Common Sense<\/a>, has published <a href=\"https:\/\/freebeacon.com\/coronavirus\/the-hijacking-of-pediatric-medicine\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">an extensive deep dive<\/a> into how the AAP has strayed so far off the beaten path in terms of the treatment of claimed cases of pediatric gender dysphoria.<\/p>\n<p>The report begins with a horrific incident that took place during the AAP\u2019s annual conference held this October in Anaheim, California. Dr. Morissa Ladinsky, an\u00a0<a id=\"reader.external-link.num-5\" href=\"https:\/\/providerdirectory.uabmedicine.org\/provider\/Morissa+Ladinsky\/575222\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">associate professor of pediatrics<\/a> at the University of Alabama at Birmingham, was giving a lecture on transgender issues when she decided to pay homage to a teenage \u201cgender transition\u201d patient. The 17-year-old boy had been \u201ctransitioned\u201d to being female but grew so despondent that they literally threw themself in front of a truck and died. Dr. Ladinsky described this horrifying act by saying the teen had \u201c<em>stepped boldly in front of a tractor-trailer, ending her life<\/em>.\u201d<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>In an address about \u201cstanding up for gender-affirming care,\u201d Ladinsky eulogized\u00a0<a id=\"reader.external-link.num-6\" href=\"https:\/\/abcnews.go.com\/US\/leelah-alcorn-transgender-teens-reported-suicide-note-makes\/story?id=27912326\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Leelah Alcorn<\/a>, an Ohio 17-year-old who, in Ladinsky\u2019s words, \u201cstepped boldly in front of a tractor-trailer, ending her life,\u201d in 2014, after leaving a suicide note that \u201cwent viral, literally around the world.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ladinsky\u2019s remarks were\u00a0<a id=\"reader.external-link.num-7\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/JuliaMasonMD1\/status\/1579975190012100608\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">captured on video<\/a>\u00a0by a horrified onlooker, Oregon pediatrician Dr. Julia Mason, who\u00a0<a id=\"reader.external-link.num-8\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/JuliaMasonMD1\/status\/1579912565525598208\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">expressed outrage<\/a>\u00a0on Twitter that Ladinsky was \u201cglorifying suicide,\u201d an act she described as \u201cunprofessional and dangerous.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That isn\u2019t just Mason\u2019s opinion. Technically speaking, it is also the official stance of the AAP, whose website for parents,\u00a0<a id=\"reader.external-link.num-9\" href=\"http:\/\/healthychildren.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">healthychildren.org<\/a>, explicitly\u00a0<a id=\"reader.external-link.num-10\" href=\"https:\/\/www.healthychildren.org\/English\/family-life\/Media\/Pages\/Talking-About-13-Reasons-Why-Teen-Suicide.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">warns<\/a>\u00a0that \u201cglorifying suicide\u201d can have a \u201c\u2018contagious\u2019 effect\u201d and inspire others to take their own lives.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>While Ladinsky\u2019s remarks were more than enough of a nightmare, demonstrating just how unhinged some medical professionals have become when it comes to transgender treatments, the majority of the AAP has serious problems in this area. The lengthy report from the <em>Free Beacon<\/em> uncovers some disturbing statistics, suggesting just how badly this issue is being handled as a matter of politics rather than medicine.<\/p>\n<p>First of all, relating to what I pointed out at the top, the AAP is widely recognized as a \u201cstandard-setting body.\u201d They are the ones issuing all of the guidelines for pediatric transgender procedures such as those used at Boston Children\u2019s and other hospitals. In many lawsuits brought by parents whose children have fallen down this rabbit hole, judges have frequently deferred to the \u201cexpert guidance\u201d of the AAP when rendering decisions.<\/p>\n<p>But the people driving the development of those guidelines are hardly politically neutral actors relying on extensive medical research. As the report notes, those guidelines were not formed based on a consensus of all the members. They were developed by \u201csmall, like-minded teams of specialists\u201d who all work in gender transition clinics. Further, more than two-thirds of the pediatricians in the APP <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2016\/10\/07\/upshot\/your-surgeon-is-probably-a-republican-your-psychiatrist-probably-a-democrat.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">are registered Democrats<\/a>, so the left-wing bias underlying the organization\u2019s operations is quite evident.<\/p>\n<p>The worst part is that so much of this supposedly scientific information is total junk science. As we have been increasingly hearing from doctors not caught up in this madness, most of these medical practices are taking us into virtually uncharted waters. The long-term effects of cross-sex hormones, particularly in children, <a href=\"https:\/\/eje.bioscientifica.com\/view\/journals\/eje\/164\/4\/635.xml\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">are not fully known<\/a> and some of the indicators point to significant problems. The drugs most commonly used as puberty blockers have never been approved by the FDA for the treatment of gender dysphoria. (I confirmed that with the FDA myself this year.) And the side effects of long-term use in children <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mayoclinic.org\/diseases-conditions\/gender-dysphoria\/in-depth\/pubertal-blockers\/art-20459075\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">are serious and well-documented<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>And don\u2019t even get me started on the genital mutilation surgery again. Yet somehow, the American Academy of Pediatrics is rubber-stamping all of these procedures. And their guidance is being followed by other pediatricians and showing up as valid medical science in court cases. How is society supposed to break through this woke wall and bring some sanity back to the conversation?\u00a0 We clearly need to work to educate the public more thoroughly, but unfortunately, that is difficult when significant portions of the mainstream media have been singing along with the transgender choir from the beginning.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>We\u2019ve recently explored far too many stories about the tragic effects of so-called \u201cgender-affirming\u201d treatments for children, such as have been seen at Boston Children\u2019s Hospital.
