Castillo claims those allegations are false.<\/p>\n<p>Castillo tried to avoid being impeached by announcing that he was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/leftist-peruvian-president-impeached-after-vowing-to-dissolve-congress\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">dissolving<\/a> Congress and forming a new emergency government.<\/p>\n<p>The move was seen by even his closest allies as \u201can attempted coup to cling to power,\u201d and it was instantly ruled unconstitutional by the top court. The country\u2019s military and police forces said that they would not support him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAny act contrary to the established constitutional order represents an infraction to the Constitution and will lead to the non-acceptance by the Armed Forces and the Police,\u201d the Joint Command of the Armed Forces reportedly said in a statement. \u201cThe citizenship is called to remain calm and trust in the state institutions legally established.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>By the end of the day, his vice president, Dina Boluarte, was sworn in as president, and Castillo was placed <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2022\/12\/07\/world\/americas\/peru-pedro-castillo-coup.html\">under arrest<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">\u201cI reject Pedro Castillo\u2019s decision to break the constitutional order by closing the Congress,\u201d Boluarte said. \u201cThis is a coup d\u2019etat that deepens the political and institutional crisis, and Peruvian society will have to overcome the crisis with a strict attachment to the law.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Castillo, who used to be a farmer, teacher, and union head, spoke publicly hours before an impeachment vote was set to happen.\u00a0He\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/articles\/peru-president-plans-to-dissolve-congress-before-impeachment-vote-11670434030\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">said<\/a>\u00a0he would rule the country by decree as new legislative elections are set up.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">\u201cWe have taken the decision to establish a government of exception, to reestablish the rule of law and democracy to which effect the following measures are dictated: to dissolve Congress temporarily, to install a government of exceptional emergency, to call to the shortest term possible to elections for a new Congress with the ability to draft a new Constitution,\u201d Castillo\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2022\/12\/07\/world\/americas\/peru-pedro-castillo-coup.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">said<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">He also established an immediate nationwide curfew, which was set to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2022\/12\/07\/americas\/peru-president-castillo-congress-dissolves-intl\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">last<\/a> from 10 p.m. on Wednesday to 4 a.m. Thursday.<\/p>\n<p>Many officials in his government resigned after his announcement on Wednesday.<\/p>\n<p><em>Charlotte Pence Bond contributed to this report.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><\/em><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Peru\u2019s socialist President Pedro Castillo was reportedly arrested Wednesday after being impeached and removed from office for staging a coup to stay in power.
