Raphael Warnock came out on top (as expected). And Republicans are once again running the \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2022\/11\/10\/candidate-quality-doesnt-matter-when-youve-got-a-d-next-to-your-name\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">quality candidate<\/a>\u201d canard as the reason for Herschel Walker\u2019s loss (in addition to the overblown, overused, Trump scapegoat). Yet despite the fact Walker was outspent by Warnock <a href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?client=internal-element-cse&#038;cx=017286230146969096498:h0rvm83ntz4&#038;q=https:\/\/www.opensecrets.org\/races\/summary%3Fcycle%3D2022%26id%3DGAS2&#038;sa=U&#038;ved=2ahUKEwjAv-nT4-f7AhUFp3IEHXKfAQwQFnoECAYQAQ&#038;usg=AOvVaw0jkszULvgInH3cLQ7tky5-\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">nearly 3 to 1<\/a> (Warnock spent $126,232,942 to Walker\u2019s $48,455,356), Walker performed remarkably well, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/interactive\/2022\/12\/06\/us\/elections\/results-georgia-us-senate-runoff.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">netting 48.6<\/a> percent of the vote to Warnock\u2019s 51.4 percent. <\/p>\n<p>This as Georgia Gov. Brian Kemp <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.com\/news\/2022\/12\/06\/georgia-runoff-election-results-warnock-walker-00072601\">only came out<\/a> in full force for Walker after he coasted to reelection in November (loaning his field organizing team to the Senate Leadership Fund \u2014 the GOP\u2019s Senate super PAC which backed Walker). This translated to just a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/politics\/2022\/11\/30\/democrats-georgia-voter-turnout\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">$2 million ground operation on Walker\u2019s behalf<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Simply put: Walker was outspent, out-fundraised, and had very little help as opposed to Warnock and his campaign\/party machine. While GOP establishment types might try to convince you that it was the Trump effect or Walker\u2019s poor candidacy, this is nothing but willful ignorance. Winning elections after the 2020 election rule changes is all about <a href=\"https:\/\/spectator.org\/it-isnt-time-to-care-who-the-republican-party-2024-nominee-is\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">the strength of a candidate\u2019s ground game<\/a>. Without that, there is no chance of ever succeeding to federal office. Here\u2019s how the Warnock campaign did it.<\/p>\n<p> 1. Ballot Harvesting <\/p>\n<p>Ballot harvesting, or the practice of going door-to-door soliciting mail-in ballots from voters, is an art form Democrats have perfected since unsupervised mail-in balloting (and a month of early voting) became legal in the wake of the Covid-19 lockdowns. Democrats in key battleground states know that <a href=\"https:\/\/theconservativetreehouse.com\/blog\/2022\/11\/09\/big-picture-2020-midterm-elections-highlights-distinct-difference-between-ballots-and-votes\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">collecting ballots is more important than collecting votes<\/a> (i.e., generating Election Day turnout), and so they <a href=\"https:\/\/traindemocrats.org\/course\/calculating-your-vote\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">calculate how many ballots they need<\/a> to secure a victory, and aim singlehandedly at that.<\/p>\n<p>There are several Georgia-based leftist nonprofits that engage in ballot harvesting and curing. America Votes, a left-wing get-out-the-vote group, <a href=\"https:\/\/americavotes.org\/america-votes-senior-leadership-team-issues-statement-on-2022s-historic-midterm-and-georgia-runoff-voter-mobilization-programs\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">knocked on 4 million doors<\/a> leading up to the Georgia runoff (in contrast, the Walker-backing Faith and Freedom Coalition aimed to knock on just 400,000 doors) and made more than 1 million phone calls encouraging likely Democrat voters to cast ballots. Other Democrat groups such as Stacey Abrams\u2019 <a href=\"https:\/\/fairfight.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Fair Fight<\/a> and the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.influencewatch.org\/non-profit\/new-georgia-project\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">New Georgia Project<\/a> have engaged thousands of volunteers to push their GOTV efforts, including registering largely non-white Georgian residents to vote. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ngpvan.com\/votebuilder\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">VoteBuilder<\/a>, a voter registration database run by the Democratic National Committee and each respective state\u2019s Democratic Party, gives such activists the information necessary to group and target Democratic voters and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ngpvan.com\/blog\/how-to-run-a-ballot-chase-program-and-score-votes-early\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">contact them about filling out and sending in their mail-in ballot<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p> 2. Smart Spending <\/p>\n<p>Georgia Democrats were very strategic about how they spent their money leading up to the runoff. While the GOP was largely focused on the old model of generating Election Day turnout through campaign mailers and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/meet-the-press\/meetthepressblog\/brian-kemp-stars-new-tv-ad-boost-herschel-walker-rcna58520\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">TV ads<\/a> (thanks to <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2022\/11\/18\/the-gops-political-consultant-problem\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">greedy GOP consultants<\/a>), Democrats spent their dollars on initiatives that guaranteed them votes. Case in point: the Democratic firm Relentless paid 1,455 Georgians to contact more than 58,000 friends and family urging them to vote for Warnock. As Axios <a href=\"https:\/\/www.axios.com\/2022\/12\/07\/georgia-senate-runoff-democrats-relational-organizing\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">reported<\/a>,<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Republicans are once again using the &#8216;quality candidate&#8217; excuse as the reason for Herschel Walker&#8217;s loss.
