A few minutes before 8:00 a.m., some <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nps.gov\/perl\/learn\/historyculture\/gino-gasparelli.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">noticed<\/a> foreign-sounding aircraft overhead, \u201cflying very low.\u201d As bombs started falling from planes painted with the red circles of Japan\u2019s \u201crising sun,\u201d sailors onboard the more than 100 ships in the harbor began yelling to the other men onboard, some still in bed or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nps.gov\/perl\/learn\/historyculture\/gino-gasparelli.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">fighting<\/a> \u201changovers from being on pass the night before.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Cecil Camp, who was on watch on the USS Utah, recalled running to the sleeping quarters on the ship, where \u201cwater was already washing over my bunk.\u201d In the mess hall, he said, \u201cThere were several other men there. One asked if he should take his dress blue uniform with him. I told him he wouldn\u2019t be needing that for a good while.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The only stories we have are ones from those who survived. Just more than an hour after the attack started, three American ships and 169 American aircraft were <a href=\"https:\/\/www.census.gov\/history\/pdf\/pearl-harbor-fact-sheet-1.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">destroyed<\/a>, with another 16 ships and 159 aircraft damaged. The death toll was even worse: 2,335 service members and 68 civilians, with another 1,178 wounded. The next day, the United States would declare war on Japan, formally entering World War II. By the war\u2019s end, roughly <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nationalww2museum.org\/students-teachers\/student-resources\/research-starters\/research-starters-worldwide-deaths-world-war\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">418,500<\/a> Americans would lose their lives.<\/p>\n<p>In America in recent years, the cost of her wars has been borne by a smaller contingent of sacrificial volunteers and their families than in the days following Pearl Harbor. Politicians send American troops overseas without declarations of war from Congress, which haven\u2019t been invoked since the 1940s. Thousands of American service members lost their lives in <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/middle-east-business-afghanistan-43d8f53b35e80ec18c130cd683e1a38f\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Afghanistan<\/a> before the botched and disorganized withdrawal from the country led by President Joe Biden\u2019s administration saw the deaths of <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2021\/08\/30\/families-and-friends-of-slain-heroes-express-grief-anger-at-bidens-failure-of-leadership\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">13 more<\/a> brave souls.<\/p>\n<p>Today, our government is recklessly depleting its stockpiles and coffers at the request of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky. Roughly $70 billion in, we\u2019ve spent far more on Ukraine than our own <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2022\/05\/11\/congress-could-nearly-double-u-s-border-budget-with-40-billion-theyre-sending-ukraine\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">border security<\/a> budget, and Biden is <a href=\"https:\/\/abcnews.go.com\/Politics\/wireStory\/biden-asks-37-billion-emergency-ukraine-aid-93353691\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">asking<\/a> Congress (and therefore taxpayers) to write a check for another $37 billion, which would send the total amount of U.S. dollars spent on Ukraine aid over 12 figures.<\/p>\n<p>As Bloomberg <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/opinion\/articles\/2022-09-18\/ukraine-war-shows-the-us-military-isn-t-ready-for-war-with-china\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">noted<\/a> in September, \u201cThe US reportedly provided one-third of its overall stockpile of Javelin antitank missiles to Ukraine in the first, most desperate weeks of the fighting. It may take years for Washington and other countries to replenish their armories.\u201d An unnamed defense official <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/articles\/ukraine-war-depleting-u-s-ammunition-stockpiles-sparking-pentagon-concern-11661792188\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">said<\/a> in August that our \u201clevel of 155mm combat rounds in U.S. military storage\u201d is now \u201cuncomfortably low\u201d after supplying Ukraine with hundreds of thousands of rounds. Another <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2022\/11\/17\/politics\/us-weapon-stocks-ukraine\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">said<\/a> stockpiles are \u201cdwindling.\u201d As the United States deepens its involvement in Ukraine at the expense of our own military preparedness, our president is <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2022\/12\/05\/under-joe-biden-threat-of-nuclear-war-has-gone-up\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">warning<\/a> of nuclear \u201cArmageddon,\u201d and media outlets are finally admitting the risk<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>There are just wars, and there are needless wars, but all wars are tragic.
