Dillashaw<\/a> has notified the promotion that he is retiring from the sport of MMA.<\/p>\n<p id=\"6DipMi\">UFC officials confirmed to MMA Fighting that Dillashaw\u2019s manager, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mmafighting.com\/fighter\/976\/tiki-ghosn\">Tiki Ghosn,<\/a> has informed the promotion of Dillashaw\u2019s decision to retire. Michael Wonsover first reported the news on <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/the_mdubb\/status\/1599890441406943232?s=46&#038;t=GUZy0ZBwiPFzVEoDzYGTFQ\">Twitter.<\/a><\/p>\n<p id=\"OQ3R36\">The decision to retire comes after Dillashaw was forced to undergo another extensive surgery to repair damage done to his shoulder following his most recent loss, which came against <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mmafighting.com\/fighter\/1528\/aljamain-sterling\">Aljamain Sterling<\/a> at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mmafighting.com\/fight-card\/1330\/ufc-280\">UFC 280<\/a>. Dillashaw has been plagued by shoulder injuries in recent years, having surgery on both arms while serving a two-year suspension under the UFC\u2019s anti-doping program for using recombinant human erythropoietin (EPO).<\/p>\n<p id=\"IBd833\">The latest surgery was expected to keep Dillashaw sidelined for at least the next year with another surgery possible in the future. That, however, was ultimately a bridge too far for Dillashaw to expect any reasonable timeline to return to action, which led to the decision to notify the UFC that he would retire from MMA.<\/p>\n<p id=\"2lJ8mI\">If his retirement extends to all combat sports, Dillashaw retires as one of the top bantamweights in MMA history with two separate title reigns in the UFC.<\/p>\n<p id=\"hPr9jx\">Dillashaw became champion with a shocking upset over <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mmafighting.com\/fighter\/506\/renan-barao\">Renan Barao<\/a> in 2014 and then repeated that performance with another dominant showcase against the Brazilian just over one year later. He dropped the title in a razor close split decision <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mmafighting.com\/fighter\/328\/dominick-cruz\">Dominick Cruz,<\/a> but then rattled off two more wins before knocking out former teammate <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mmafighting.com\/fighter\/3121\/cody-garbrandt\">Cody Garbrandt<\/a> to reclaim the belt.<\/p>\n<p id=\"hmKqcP\">Following a second win over Garbrandt, Dillashaw then made the decision to attempt to become a two-division champion after dropping down to flyweight to challenge for the 125-pound title. Unfortunately, he came up short, falling to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mmafighting.com\/fighter\/2186\/henry-cejudo\">Henry Cejudo<\/a> in just 32 seconds.<\/p>\n<p id=\"EOJjOu\">Afterward, Dillashaw relinquished his bantamweight title after revealing he had tested positive for EPO, which led to his two-year suspension.
