It was initially unclear what the structure was, but archeologists who examined it Tuesday believe they have the answer.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe erosion is unprecedented at this point,\u201d said Volusia Beach Safety Deputy Chief Tammy Malphurs. \u201cWe haven\u2019t seen this kind of erosion in a very long time. I\u2019ve been on the beach probably 25 years that\u2019s the first time I\u2019ve seen it exposed.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Archeologists who studied the discovery believe it is a cargo ship from the 1800s. What was left of it was buried under five feet of sand. The researchers believe the potential merchant ship was traveling along the coast, before it was sunk by a storm. They say the remains are extremely fragile and strongly warned against messing with the site. JOIN US.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf you have a random, wooden shipwreck on the beach, it\u2019s most likely a wreck from the 1800s and that\u2019s because there were so many more ships sailing in the 1800s than in the centuries before,\u201d Chuck Meide, Director of the Lighthouse Archaeological Maritime Program,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.clickorlando.com\/news\/local\/2022\/12\/06\/mystery-debris-on-florida-beach-solved-heres-what-archaeologists-think-it-is\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">told<\/a> Click Orlando.<\/p>\n<p>State archeologists are planning further investigation into the wooden remains in an attempt to age the wood, including examining maritime records to potentially identify the ship. WFTV Reporter Mike Springer <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/mspringerwftv\/status\/1600183498534330368?cxt=HHwWgICl2b2a_7QsAAAA\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">says<\/a> that \u201cdue to the materials and construction of the ship and the number of ships sailing off the coast, archeologists believe the 1800s is the most likely era.\u201d<\/p>\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Here are some more photos of the object that\u2019s been unearthed on the beach just south of Frank Rendon Park.<\/p>\n<p>Archeologists are here for their final day unearthing it.<\/p>\n<p>They believe it is a ship. Hurricanes Ian and Nicole removed layers of the area\u2019s sand. In the wake of Nicole, Governor Ron DeSantis <a href=\"https:\/\/www.flgov.com\/2022\/11\/11\/governor-ron-desantis-joins-local-officials-to-assess-damage-from-hurricane-nicole-announces-20-million-for-emergency-beach-repair\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">announced<\/a> $20 million in emergency beach repair to help coastal flooding and beach erosion.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is obviously not as significant as a storm as Hurricane Ian was, but coming on the heels of that, you\u2019re seeing communities, particularly in the Volusia County area, that had a lot of erosion on the coastline,\u201d DeSantis said last month.<\/p>\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Saint Augustine Maritime Archaeologists confirm to me that this is a shipwreck likely from the mid to late 1800s. They believe it was likely a merchant ship. State archeologists are <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fox13news.com\/news\/mystery-items-found-on-florida-beach-believed-to-be-shipwreck-site?taid=638fad6fc7dd5a00010913e2&#038;utm_campaign=trueanthem&#038;utm_medium=trueanthem&#038;utm_source=twitter\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">working<\/a> with other archeologists on the investigation.
