The guidelines advocate for an approach to explore possible underlying factors that may be causing their dysphoria.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe exploratory approach outlined here stands in contrast to the \u2018gender-affirmative approach,\u2019\u201d the introduction to the <a href=\"https:\/\/genderexploratory.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/GETA_ClinicalGuide_2022.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">guidelines<\/a> read. \u201cThe affirmative approach assumes that minors presenting with a wish to live in a gender role different from their sex are transgender, and that the primary role of the therapist is to help minors transition.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Therapists who abide by the affirmative approach often facilitate a social transition, which usually includes a name change and new pronouns. Although social transition is commonly portrayed as a benign way to allow children to express their \u201ctrue selves,\u201d there are good reasons to doubt this narrative.<\/p>\n<p><b data-stringify-type=\"bold\"><a class=\"c-link\" tabindex=\"-1\" href=\"https:\/\/get.dailywire.com\/readers-pass\/read-only-v2?utm_campaign=dwplus&#038;utm_medium=editorial&#038;utm_source=dwsite&#038;cid=dwplus&#038;mid=z&#038;xid=0\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-stringify-link=\"https:\/\/get.dailywire.com\/readers-pass\/read-only-v2?utm_campaign=dwplus&#038;utm_medium=editorial&#038;utm_source=dwsite&#038;cid=dwplus&#038;mid=z&#038;xid=0\" data-sk=\"tooltip_parent\" data-remove-tab-index=\"true\">TIRED OF THE LEGACY MEDIA\u2019S BIAS CONTROLLING THE NARRATIVE AND OBSCURING THE TRUTH? JOIN US.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>All available <a href=\"https:\/\/acamh.onlinelibrary.wiley.com\/doi\/abs\/10.1111\/camh.12330\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">research<\/a> suggests that this seemingly innocuous act of support is an active psychosocial intervention that may greatly increase the likelihood of a child persisting in the rejection of their bodies. Gender-affirming therapists frequently provide their clients with letters of support to pursue medical transition.<\/p>\n<p>Medical transition, which includes puberty blockers, cross-sex hormones, and surgeries comes with significant risks. \u201cThese risks include compromised bone density and brain development, cardiovascular complications, neoplasms, and other dangers,\u201d the guidelines read.<\/p>\n<p>In addition, children who begin taking puberty blockers during the first signs of puberty and go on to take cross-sex hormones, which constitute the vast majority, will have permanent loss of fertility and sexual function.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis means that children as young as 9-12 may be waiving their future right to sexual function and reproduction long before they are mature enough to comprehend the importance of these functions,\u201d says GETA. \u201cThis is especially alarming since gender-related distress is a common developmental phase of many pre-gay youth who may not discover their sexual orientation until they are more mature.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>GETA believes in a more \u201cpatient-centered\u201d and \u201cwhole-person approach\u201d that \u201cdoes not favor any particular outcome.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cJust like any other patient, gender distressed youth deserve individualized treatment that leaves room for a full therapeutic process and doesn\u2019t come with any fixed agenda,\u201d said Lisa Marchiano, a licensed therapist who co-authored the new guidelines. \u201cGood psychotherapists already have the skills to offer this. They just need a reminder that what we do with gender questioning youth is the same way we would approach any other patient\u2014with compassion and curiosity.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Along with Marchiano, the new guidelines\u2019 contributors include Sasha Ayad, Dr. Roberto D\u2019Angelo, Dr. Dianna Kenny, Dr. Stephen B. Levine, and Stella O\u2019Malley, the founder of <a href=\"https:\/\/genspect.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Genspect<\/a>, an advocacy group that strives for an evidence-based approach to gender distress.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn view of the heavy medical burden and risks associated with medical transition, the uncertain long-term benefits, and low-quality evidence base, a growing number of public health authorities internationally are recognizing that less invasive approaches, such as exploratory psychotherapy, should be the first line treatment for youth with gender distress,\u201d the guidelines read.<\/p>\n<p>The international authorities that have departed from the gender-affirming model of care were outlined in the guide. After conducting systematic reviews of the evidence for the use of puberty blockers and cross-sex hormones in treating pediatric gender dysphoria, health authorities in <a href=\"https:\/\/segm.org\/segm-summary-sweden-prioritizes-therapy-curbs-hormones-for-gender-dysphoric-youth\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Sweden<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/genderreport.ca\/finland-strict-guidelines-for-treating-gender-dysphoria\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Finland<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/englands-national-health-service-abandons-gender-affirming-model-of-care\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">England<\/a> have decided to abandon the \u201cgender-affirming\u201d model, finding the costs far outweigh the benefits. Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Psychiatrists published a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ranzcp.org\/news-policy\/policy-and-advocacy\/position-statements\/gender-dysphoria\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">position statement<\/a> on gender dysphoria last year distancing itself from the gender-affirming model.<\/p>\n<p>England\u2019s National Health Service (NHS) has proposed <a href=\"https:\/\/www.engage.england.nhs.uk\/specialised-commissioning\/gender-dysphoria-services\/user_uploads\/b1937-ii-specialist-service-for-children-and-young-people-with-gender-dysphoria-1.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">new guidelines<\/a> for treating trans-identifying youth and warns that adolescents identifying as transgender may be experiencing a \u201ctransient phase\u201d and that doctors should not encourage them to change their names and pronouns. \u201cSocial transition,\u201d the NHS said, is not a \u201cneutral act\u201d and could have \u201csignificant effects\u201d in terms of \u201cpsychological functioning.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In the United States, there are few alternatives to \u201caffirming\u201d the identity of a child who believes themselves to be transgender. Over 20 states <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lgbtmap.org\/equality-maps\/conversion_therapy\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">passed laws<\/a> in recent years banning \u201cconversion therapy,\u201d which now includes any attempt to dissuade someone of their \u201cgender identity.\u201d They succeeded in the ban by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.realityslaststand.com\/p\/on-gender-the-aap-has-chosen-ideology\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">equating<\/a> \u201cwatchful waiting\u201d with the discredited practice of trying to get gays and lesbians to \u201cconvert\u201d to heterosexuality.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCurrent thinking about treatment for gender dysphoria is structured by a binary that considers only two possible approaches: affirmation or conversion,\u201d the guidelines explain.
