Garnick, a Harvard professor, oncologist, and co-principal investigator for the drug Lupron, wrote a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2022\/11\/28\/opinion\/letters\/puberty-blockers-transgender-youths.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">letter<\/a> to the editor of the New York Times in support of a recent <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2022\/11\/14\/health\/puberty-blockers-transgender.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">investigation<\/a> into the health effects of puberty blocker drugs for adolescents experiencing gender dysphoria.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe scholarly and well-researched article raises significant safety issues about using puberty blockers in prepubescent and pubescent children as part of gender transitioning,\u201d Garnick argued.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The letter was one of four accepted in response to the NYT article that described the \u201clong-term physical effects and other consequences\u201d of puberty blockers prescribed to adolescents experiencing gender distress. The other three letters, which were not written by medical professionals, criticized the article as \u201ctransphobic.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><b data-stringify-type=\"bold\"><a class=\"c-link\" tabindex=\"-1\" href=\"https:\/\/get.dailywire.com\/subscribe\/plus?utm_campaign=dwplus&#038;utm_medium=editorial&#038;utm_source=dwsite&#038;cid=dwplus&#038;mid=z&#038;xid=0\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-stringify-link=\"https:\/\/get.dailywire.com\/subscribe\/plus?utm_campaign=dwplus&#038;utm_medium=editorial&#038;utm_source=dwsite&#038;cid=dwplus&#038;mid=z&#038;xid=0\" data-sk=\"tooltip_parent\" data-remove-tab-index=\"true\" aria-describedby=\"sk-tooltip-28422\">TIRED OF THE LEGACY MEDIA\u2019S BIAS CONTROLLING THE NARRATIVE AND OBSCURING THE TRUTH? JOIN US AND SAVE 30%.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Garnick was one of three academic principal clinical investigators of studies that led to the initial FDA approval of Lupron for the treatment of metastatic prostate cancer. He studied the class of drugs, GnRH agonists \u2013 which include puberty blockers \u2013 for more than four decades.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>GnRH agonists are FDA approved to treat prostate cancer, endometriosis, and precocious puberty \u2013 a condition caused by pituitary gland dysfunction in which children begin to sexually mature before age 8 or 9. Lupron has also been used in the past to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bostonmagazine.com\/news\/2014\/02\/25\/chemical-castration\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">chemically castrate<\/a> violent sex offenders.<\/p>\n<p>Doctors have prescribed puberty blockers off-label as a \u201ctreatment\u201d for gender dysphoria on an experimental basis. They are not approved for their off-label use in this context \u2013 which occurs during a critical window of brain and body development. Much of the existing published data pertain only to precocious puberty patients.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI can say that physicians are still learning and continue to be concerned about the safety of these agents in adults,\u201d Garnick continued in the letter. \u201cWoefully little safety data are available for the likely more vulnerable younger population.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Proponents of \u201cgender-affirming\u201d care claim that puberty blockers are \u201ccompletely safe,\u201d \u201creversible,\u201d and only a \u201cpause button on puberty,\u201d despite the absence of any evidence to support these statements. GnRH agonists act to suppress estrogen and testosterone \u2013 the hormones responsible for the development of the reproductive system. They also affect the bones, brain, and other parts of the body.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBone loss in adult men who have been on these agents is significant, and a leading cause of morbidity with long-term administration,\u201d Garnick warned. As outlined in the New York Times article, the risk of osteoporosis (bone density loss) is significant when puberty blocking drugs are administered in adolescence.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDuring puberty, bone mass typically surges, determining a lifetime of bone health,\u201d the authors of the article wrote. \u201cWhen adolescents are using blockers, bone density growth flatlines, on average, according to an analysis commissioned by The Times of observational studies examining the effects.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Children who begin taking puberty blockers during the first signs of puberty and go on to take cross-sex hormones, which constitutes the vast majority, will result in the permanent loss of fertility and sexual function.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOther safety issues include cognitive, metabolic and cardiovascular effects, still under intense investigation,\u201d said Garnick.<\/p>\n<p>Manufacturers that dominate the U.S. market for puberty blockers refuse to conduct safety trials on their frequently-prescribed, off-label drugs used to treat gender dysphoria in adolescents. Endo International plc and AbbVie Inc have repeatedly <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/puberty-blocking-drug-companies-refuse-to-conduct-safety-trials\">declined<\/a> to conduct safety tests on the puberty blocking drug Lupron.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe prudent and ethical use of such agents in the younger population should demand that every pubertal or pre-pubertal child be part of rigorous clinical research studies that evaluate both the short-term and longer-term effects of these agents to better define the true risks and benefits rather than relying on anecdotal information,\u201d Garnick concluded.<\/p>\n<p>Endo Pharmaceuticals, Inc., and AbbVie Inc. are currently under <a href=\"https:\/\/www.texasattorneygeneral.gov\/news\/releases\/ag-paxton-investigate-promotion-puberty-blockers-children\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">investigation<\/a> in Texas for allegedly advertising and promoting puberty blockers for \u201cunapproved uses without disclosing the potential risks associated with these drugs to children and their parents.\u201d Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton opened the investigation last year under the Texas Deceptive Trade Practices Act.<\/p>\n<p>On the AbbVie website, Lupron is only indicated for treatment of precocious puberty, uterine fibroids, advanced prostate cancer, and endometriosis. However, AbbVie has been active in advancing transgender causes. According to AbbVie\u2019s diversity statement on their website, the pharmaceutical company prioritizes \u201csupporting the LGBTQ+ community in visible ways\u201d and \u201cfurthering education around LGBTQ+ issues,\u201d including $50,000 donations to the Trevor Project and the Heartland Alliance that were \u201cused to support programs specifically serving LGBTQ+ populations.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Additionally, AbbVie is listed as a <a href=\"https:\/\/gendercool.org\/partners-and-supporters\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">sponsor<\/a> of the GenderCool Project, an organization\u00a0that embraces the concept of \u201ctransgender children.\u201d Recently, AbbVie has come under fire for <a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20220526081654\/https:\/\/www.mamahasamustache.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">partnering<\/a> in the transgender film for children, \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.mamahasamustache.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Mama has a Mustache<\/a>.\u201d According to its website, the film<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A clinical investigator of the drug commonly used off-label to block puberty in trans-identifying adolescents voiced his concerns about administering the drug without conducting proper safety tests.
