I don\u2019t know so, but I think so. You know, he\u2019s been there a long time. He\u2019s been the leader for a long time. I think that he has those that allow him to put together the kind of deals that were necessary to get to 218.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>But, Clyburn said, if McCarthy is unsuccessful in winning the support of his caucus, he may need to consider reaching across the aisle.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf there are seven or eight people who are not going to vote for him, I\u2019d advise him to go and look on the other side of the aisle and see whether there are some deals over there to be made as well,\u201d Clyburn said.<\/p>\n<p>Asked what such a deal would entail, Clyburn replied, \u201cWe want to push an agenda that makes this country\u2019s greatness accessible and affordable for all. I just talked about the South. I just talked about the parts of the South that can lift up so much of this. I think that we can sit down to get there, and we might be able to forge an agenda that would be acceptable to 218 people.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2>Conservative Opposition<\/h2>\n<p>Clyburn\u2019s comments come as McCarthy, Republicans\u2019 nominee for the speakership, faces significant challenges from conservatives within his caucus.<\/p>\n<p>Leading the conservative charge against McCarthy is Rep. Andy Biggs (R-Ariz.), who <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theepochtimes.com\/arizona-rep-andy-biggs-to-challenge-mccarthy-for-house-speaker_4863696.html\">mounted a bid to win the nomination over McCarthy.<\/a><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_4863871\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"https:\/\/img.theepochtimes.com\/assets\/uploads\/2022\/11\/15\/GettyImages-1244782277-1200x800.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"lazy size-medium wp-image-4863871\" src=\"https:\/\/www.theepochtimes.com\/assets\/themes\/eet\/images\/white.png\" data-src=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/GettyImages-1244782277-600x400-1.jpg\" alt=\"Epoch Times Photo\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\"><noscript><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-4863871\" src=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/GettyImages-1244782277-600x400-1.jpg\" alt=\"Epoch Times Photo\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" \/><\/noscript><\/figcaption><\/a> (L-R) Rep. (Drew Angerer\/Getty Images)<\/figure>\n<p>\u201cWe have a new paradigm here, and I think the country wants a different direction from the House of Representatives,\u201d Biggs told Newsmax. \u201cAnd it\u2019s a new world, and, yes, I\u2019m going to be nominated tomorrow to the position of speaker of the House.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ultimately, this did not come to fruition. In a vote among Republicans, McCarthy won 188 votes to Biggs\u2019s 31, making McCarthy the Republican nominee for the top spot for the time being. The full House will eventually vote to elect the next speaker.<\/p>\n<p>But McCarthy\u2019s troubles are just beginning.<\/p>\n<p>Other Republicans like Rep. Chip Roy (R-Texas) have echoed Biggs\u2019s demand that the party take advantage of the moment to make significant changes to how congressional Republicans operate.<\/p>\n<p>In an op-ed for the Washington Examiner, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theepochtimes.com\/we-have-to-fight-for-something-chip-roy-calls-for-bolder-leadership-in-118th-congress_4857760.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Roy blasted Republican leaders in both chambers of Congress<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe leadership failed to produce the kind of concrete plan and bold strategy the moment required,\u201d Roy said after Republicans only narrowly took the House and failed to recapture the Senate.<\/p>\n<h2>\u2018Will Not Play Politics\u2019<\/h2>\n<p>Matthew Tragesser, a spokesman for Biggs, told The Epoch Times that they are concerned about past comments McCarthy has made about impeaching President Joe Biden\u2019s appointed officials.<\/p>\n<p>At the end of October, McCarthy said that Republicans \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theepochtimes.com\/mccarthy-suggests-opposition-to-biden-impeachment-efforts_4808023.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">will not play politics<\/a>\u201d with impeachment.<\/p>\n<p>But many Republicans have pushed for the party to use the majority to seek the removal from office of Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas and Attorney General Merrick Garland.<\/p>\n<p>Republicans have blamed the worsening crisis along the southern border, which last month <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbp.gov\/newsroom\/national-media-release\/cbp-releases-october-2022-monthly-operational-update\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">saw more than 185,000 recorded encounters with illegal aliens<\/a>, on Mayorkas\u2019s decisions as DHS chief.<\/p>\n<p>Others have pushed efforts to remove Garland.\u00a0House Judiciary Committee Republicans contended in a 1,050-page report that Garland\u2019s Department of Justice has been <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theepochtimes.com\/house-republicans-allege-weaponization-of-fbi-doj-in-1050-page-whistleblower-report_4844447.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u201cweaponized\u201d against conservatives<\/a> and enemies of the Biden administration (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dropbox.com\/s\/65oqpj6elugudb7\/HJC%20STAFF%20FBI%20REPORT.pdf?dl=0\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">pdf<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>McCarthy \u201cseems uninterested in using impeachment articles against bad actors,\u201d\u00a0Tragesser commented.\u00a0\u201cThat\u2019s a major problem.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He added that \u201cthe House requires a leader who will be aggressive and leverage existing oversight procedures.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Reps. Matt Gaetz (R-Fla.) and Ralph Norman (R-S.C.) have <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theepochtimes.com\/another-republican-says-he-wont-vote-for-kevin-mccarthy-to-become-house-speaker_4879722.html\">also expressed opposition to a Speaker McCarthy.<\/a><\/p>\n<h2>McCarthy Doesn\u2019t Have the Votes<\/h2>\n<p>At the time of publication, it is evident that McCarthy does not have the votes to take the speaker\u2019s gavel in January.<\/p>\n<p>In a larger majority, this would be less of an issue; speaker candidates always receive some intra-party opposition. (Kevin Dietsch\/Getty Images)<\/figure>\n<p>Among those who have announced their opposition to McCarthy\u2014Biggs, Roy, Gaetz, and Norman, among others\u2014several have said that their opposition to McCarthy is immovable.<\/p>\n<p>McCarthy has shot back at his critics, warning that opposing his speakership is equivalent to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theepochtimes.com\/mccarthy-says-gop-opposition-to-speakership-is-squandering-majority_4904217.html\">\u201csquandering the majority\u201d<\/a> that Republicans won last month.<\/p>\n<p>In the worst case, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theepochtimes.com\/mccarthy-says-gop-opposition-to-his-leadership-could-allow-democrats-to-choose-the-next-speaker_4892899.html\">McCarthy and his allies have warned<\/a>, this opposition could allow Democrats to choose the speaker.<\/p>\n<p>Still, taking Democrat support to win the position would be a bad look for McCarthy, and one he has said he does not want.<\/p>\n<p>Traditionally, the vote for speaker runs along mostly party lines, with the minority party historically voting against the majority party\u2019s nominee. For McCarthy to use Democrat support to propel himself to the position would be unprecedented.<\/p>\n<p>The final vote for speaker will be the first order of business for the newly-elected 118th Congress when they gather in Washington for the first time on Jan. 3, 2023.<\/p>\n<p>Clyburn, a longtime Democratic leader, said after Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.), 82, and Majority Leader Steny Hoyer (D-Md.), 83, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theepochtimes.com\/pelosi-announces-political-future-after-democrats-lose-house_4869395.html\">announced that they would step aside<\/a> that he would seek a lower leadership position, that of assistant minority leader.
