Public trust in Tampa\u2019s police department is paramount to our success as a city and community,\u201d Castor said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">O\u2019Connor was the passenger in a golf cart driven by her husband, a former Tampa police officer who is retired. The golf cart had no license plate displayed, and a Pinellas County Sheriff\u2019s deputy pulled the couple over. In body cam footage, O\u2019Connor showed Deputy Larry Jacoby her badge, and he said she looked familiar.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">\u201cI\u2019m hoping that you\u2019ll just let us go tonight,\u201d she said before apologizing and giving the deputy her card.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">\u201cIf you ever need anything, call me. Serious,\u201d O\u2019Connor <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2022\/12\/05\/us\/tampa-police-chief-mary-oconnor-resigns\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">said<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sportskeeda.com\/pop-culture\/news-watch-bodycam-footage-shows-tampa-police-chief-mary-o-connor-evading-traffic-stop\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">WATCH<\/a><\/strong>:<\/p>\n[embedded content]\n<p class=\"p1\">In 1995, O\u2019Connor was fired from the police department after she was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wfla.com\/8-on-your-side\/1995-arrest-of-tampas-new-police-chief-expunged-by-court\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">arrested<\/a> in a separate traffic stop for battery on a law enforcement officer. The following year, however, she was put back on the force and \u201creinstated as a police officer,\u201d serving for a year as a \u201cprobationary employee.\u201d Mayor Castor alluded to the previous incident in her statement about the resignation.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">\u201cThis is especially disappointing because I gave Mary O\u2019Connor a second chance, as I believe in second chances for people. Which is one of the reasons that the disappointment today runs so deep. I had high hope for Chief O\u2019Connor, as she was off to such a strong start by reducing violent gun crime, proactively engaging with our community and focusing on officer wellness. But these accomplishments pale in comparison to the priority I place on integrity,\u201d Castor noted.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">In her resignation <a href=\"https:\/\/drive.google.com\/file\/d\/1pKpoM8XJpbP1vuRhrHpaxwbTt73ywXAA\/view\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">letter<\/a>, O\u2019Connor <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wfla.com\/news\/hillsborough-county\/tampa-police-chief-mary-oconnor-resigns\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">said<\/a>, \u201cI would never want my personal mistake to stand in the way of the progress I have made in mending relationships between the police department and the community, so for that reason, I am resigning.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">After the most recent incident, Castor <a href=\"https:\/\/wusfnews.wusf.usf.edu\/courts-law\/2022-12-05\/tampa-police-chief-oconnor-resigns-after-probe-into-golf-card-traffic-stop\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">noted<\/a> on Thursday that O\u2019Connor had used \u201cpoor judgment\u201d and could be disciplined.
