(Photo by Waleed Zein\/Anadolu Agency via Getty Images)\" src=\"https:\/\/media.bleacherreport.com\/image\/upload\/w_40,h_27,c_fill\/v1670118504\/y4zsfiv8nsc2qmsj7rkt.jpg\" itemprop=\"contentUrl\" \/><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p><small><span class=\"caption\"><\/span><span itemprop=\"citation\" class=\"credit\">Waleed Zein\/Anadolu Agency via Getty Images<\/span><\/small><\/div>\n<p class=\"\">Floyd Mayweather Jr.&#8217;s nickname is &#8220;Money,&#8221; and he is willing to spend a lot of it to become the owner of an NBA franchise.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">Speaking at an event, the retired boxing superstar said he&#8217;s &#8220;been working on buying an NBA team outright,&#8221; and he, along with a business partner Brent Johnson, has already made an offer of over $2 billion for majority ownership.<\/p>\n<div class=\"atom twitterEmbed\">\n<div class=\"twitterEmbed__container\">\n<blockquote class=\"tweet-blockquote tw-align-center\" data-lang=\"zxx\"><p>Daily Loud <span class=\"acct\">@DailyLoud<\/span><\/p>\n<p lang=\"zxx\" dir=\"ltr\"><a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/fXfs1zlY92\">pic.twitter.com\/fXfs1zlY92<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p class=\"\">Mayweather did say he would be willing to own a potential expansion franchise in Las Vegas or Seattle, but he is also keeping an eye on any current teams that could be for sale.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">ESPN&#8217;s <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/wojespn\/status\/1577890581728186369\" rel=\"noopener\">Adrian Wojnarowski<\/a> reported in October that Vegas and Seattle are &#8220;real&#8221; candidates for expansion, but it&#8217;s &#8220;likely years away&#8221; because the NBA wants to negotiate its new television\/media rights deals and a collective bargaining agreement before adding new teams.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">Among current NBA franchises, the Phoenix Suns are the only one known to be for sale. Robert Sarver <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/nba\/story\/_\/id\/34636682\/robert-sarver-says-starting-process-sell-nba-phoenix-suns-wnba-phoenix-mercury\" rel=\"noopener\">announced<\/a> in September he would sell the club, as well as the WNBA&#8217;s Phoenix Mercury, amid fallout from the <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/nba\/story\/_\/id\/34584665\/phoenix-suns-owner-robert-sarver-suspended-year-fined-10-million-investigation-finds-conduct-clearly-violated-workplace-standards\" rel=\"noopener\">league&#8217;s investigation<\/a> that found he used racist language, had &#8220;instances of inequitable conduct toward female employees,&#8221; made &#8220;sex-related comments&#8221; and inappropriate comments about the appearance of employees.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">One investment banker told ESPN&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/nba\/story\/_\/id\/34726879\/phoenix-suns-likely-fetch-record-sale-price-nba-team-bankers-say\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Baxter Holmes<\/a> the Suns will likely end up selling for the highest price ever for an NBA franchise. The current record holder is the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nba.com\/news\/report-joseph-tsai-buy-nets-23-billion\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">$2.35 billion<\/a> Joe Tsai paid for the Brooklyn Nets.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">The Sarver situation also spotlights a potential hurdle that Mayweather would have to overcome to become the owner of an NBA team.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">Even though Mayweather claims to have the money to make the purchase, he has several legal problems on his r\u00e9sum\u00e9.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">Mayweather has a <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/andscape.com\/features\/why-floyd-mayweather-can-still-box-after-beating-women\/\" rel=\"noopener\">long history<\/a> of domestic abuse allegations. He <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.reviewjournal.com\/sports\/boxing\/police-called-to-another-dispute-between-floyd-mayweather-jr-and-a-woman\/\" rel=\"noopener\">pleaded guilty<\/a> to two counts of domestic battery in 2002 for punching Melissa Brim, the mother of his daughter, at their home.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">In December 2011, Mayweather <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/boxing\/story\/_\/id\/7376829\/floyd-mayweather-jr-sentenced-90-days-jail-domestic-violence-plea\" rel=\"noopener\">pleaded guilty<\/a> to a battery domestic violence charge and no contest to two harassment charges stemming from an argument that involved hair-pulling, punching and arm-twisting with his ex-girlfriend, Josie Harris, in front of two of his children.
