Posts against gay men and Jews went from 2,506 times to 3,964, and 61 percent, respectively during the two weeks after Musk bought Twitter.<\/p>\n<p>Musk <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/elonmusk\/status\/1598755659499044879\">replied<\/a> in a tweet that the report was \u201cUtterly false.\u201d The NY Times report has, till now, gotten over 44,000 likes, while the Musk response garnered 346,000 likes, and nearly 21,000 retweets.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cElon Musk sent up the Bat Signal to every kind of racist, misogynist and homophobe that Twitter was open for business,\u201d said Imran Ahmed, the chief executive of the Center for Countering Digital Hate, in the report. \u201cThey have reacted accordingly.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The outlet said that accounts related to the terrorist group ISIS were coming back on the platform, along with QAnon supporters who have received verification symbols.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis reporting is such garbage,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/realchrisrufo\/status\/1598761643005313024\">said<\/a> Christopher Rufo, a senior fellow and director of the initiative on critical race theory at the Manhattan Institute. \u201cThe experience on Twitter is pretty much the same as it was before, plus a few \u2018edgy\u2019 accounts being reinstated. The left-wing journalists want to create a false narrative to justify more censorship. It\u2019s transparent and pathetic.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2>Hate Speech on Twitter<\/h2>\n<p>Musk has reiterated his view that hate speech will not be tolerated on the platform, and that there will be no \u201cfree-for-all hellscape\u201d regarding speech. However, he has also upheld free speech on Twitter by uncensoring prominent conservative personalities like former president Donald Trump, investigative news organization Project Veritas, and satire site The Babylon Bee.<\/p>\n<p>This has irked many on the left who advocate for banning these accounts under the pretext of hate speech.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBy \u2018free speech\u2019, I simply mean that which matches the law,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/elonmusk\/status\/1519036983137509376?lang=en\">said<\/a> Musk earlier in the year. \u201cI am against censorship that goes far beyond the law. If people want less free speech, they will ask government to pass laws to that effect. Therefore, going beyond the law is contrary to the will of the people.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In a Dec. 2 tweet, Musk <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/elonmusk\/status\/1598752139278532610\">said<\/a>, \u201cHate speech impressions (# of times tweet was viewed) continue to decline, despite significant user growth! <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/TwitterSafety\">@TwitterSafety<\/a> will publish data weekly. Freedom of speech doesn\u2019t mean freedom of reach. Negativity should &#038; will get less reach than positivity.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He added, \u201cThere are about 500M tweets per day &#038; billions of impressions, so hate speech impressions are <0><\/p>\n<h2>European Backlash, Advertiser Boycott<\/h2>\n<p>A senior European Union official issued a warning to Musk that Twitter could be blocked on the continent if it fails to comply with the bloc\u2019s regulations.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere is still huge work ahead, as Twitter will have to implement transparent user policies, significantly reinforce content moderation, and protect freedom of speech, tackle disinformation with resolve, and limit targeted advertising,\u201d EU Commissioner Thierry Breton told Musk, according to a <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/ThierryBreton\/status\/1598015892457426944?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw%7Ctwcamp%5Etweetembed%7Ctwterm%5E1598015892457426944%7Ctwgr%5E94bd92def3ffbaf5b239219bcc0931309a4b1e1d%7Ctwcon%5Es1_&#038;ref_url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.theverge.com%2F2022%2F12%2F1%2F23487746%2Ftwitter-digital-services-act-elon-musk-takeover-thierry-breton\">readout<\/a> of a call between the two had on Wednesday.<\/p>\n<p>The warning comes amid a pullback by advertising from investing on the platform. Major brands such as Jeep, Mars candy, cereal maker Kellogg, pharma giant Merck, and Verizon had paused advertising according to an analysis report by The Washington Post.<\/p>\n<p>Other brands, including United Airlines, Carlsberg, Mondelez, and General Motors, have also stopped displaying ads on Twitter.<\/p>\n<p>Twitter\u2019s policy on hateful conduct states: \u201cYou may not promote violence against or directly attack or threaten other people on the basis of race, ethnicity, national origin, caste, sexual orientation, gender, gender identity, religious affiliation, age, disability, or serious disease.
