Specifically, Biden is weighing whether to significantly limit the number of migrants who can apply for asylum in the United States. The new policy would prohibit migrants \u201cwho are fleeing persecution from seeking refuge in the United States unless they were first denied safe harbor by another country, like Mexico.\u201d\n<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.axios.com\/2022\/11\/30\/biden-title-42-immigration-news\">Biden<\/a> would effectively use the new policy to replace a public health rule, which was implemented at the beginning of the pandemic but will be terminated on December 21<sup>st<\/sup>, which was used by Trump and then Biden, to strictly limit the number of migrants coming into the United States.\n<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s amazing, really.\n<\/p>\n<p>Trump has been public enemy number one amongst the left for seven years. Perhaps no figure in US political history has been as universally maligned as Trump. He is unequivocally despised.<\/p>\n<p>Why? There are a few reasons, of course, but perhaps most prominent amongst them is Trump\u2019s<a href=\"https:\/\/www.19fortyfive.com\/2022\/09\/why-ron-desantis-and-other-governors-are-going-to-war-on-immigration\/\"> immigration<\/a> policies. At the heart of the left\u2019s criticism of Trump \u2013 that he is a racist, a xenophobe, and an isolationist \u2013 lies his immigration policies and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2018\/05\/17\/us\/trump-animals-ms-13-gangs.html\">rhetoric<\/a>.\n<\/p>\n<p>As early as the 2016 campaign, the left vociferously condemned Trump\u2019s stance on immigration and all related incidents.<\/p>\n<p>There was the Border Wall, of course. That was a big one. There was the Trump Tower <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.com\/blogs\/2016-gop-primary-live-updates-and-results\/2016\/05\/donald-trump-cinco-de-mayo-taco-hispanics-222860\">taco bowl<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/2016\/5\/5\/11603760\/donald-trump-taco-bowl-tweet\">incident<\/a>. There was the \u201cbad hombres\u201d comment. The emphasis on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vox.com\/policy-and-politics\/2018\/2\/26\/16955936\/ms-13-trump-immigrants-crime\">MS-13<\/a> gang violence. The aggregate is taken as Trump\u2019s general view on immigration. A\n<\/p>\n<p>nd yeah, there was a tone there towards immigrants that didn\u2019t seem especially pleasant or welcoming. But the real meat of Trump\u2019s immigration views are the actual policies that were implemented. And Trump\u2019s actual policies are basically Biden\u2019s actual policies.<\/p>\n<p>Yet, the Trump immigration policies that energized the left with such vigor, for so long, have barely elicited a response during the Biden years. I don\u2019t hear anyone calling Biden a bigot or a fascist, nor a xenophobe or an isolationist.\n<\/p>\n<p>But if <a href=\"https:\/\/www.19fortyfive.com\/2022\/03\/biden-administration-set-to-speed-up-immigration-processing\/\">Biden<\/a> is doing precisely what Trump was doing with respect to immigration (including, remarkably, constructing the Border Wall), and the left is unmoved, what does that say?\n<\/p>\n<p>One explanation is that the left wasn\u2019t really ticked about Trump\u2019s immigration policies, they were rather just ticket about Trump, for the sake of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.19fortyfive.com\/2021\/11\/joe-bidens-immigration-policies-are-a-national-security-threat\/\">partisan politics<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>They were Team Blue, ride or die, and they were going to take on Trump no matter what he did. That\u2019s one potential explanation.\n<\/p>\n<p>The second is that the left fixated entirely on rhetoric. The left heard Trump say we\u2019ve got some bad hombres and we need to stop these criminals and rapists from coming to America and then he started building a Border Wall, and they said okay he\u2019s a racist.\n<\/p>\n<p>Then, the left heard Biden say America is a land for everyone, everyone is welcome here \u2013 and then resume building the <a href=\"https:\/\/theintercept.com\/2022\/09\/18\/biden-trump-border-wall\/\">Border Wall<\/a>, and they said, okay, he\u2019s a globalist.\n<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s as if all Biden had to do was be nice and say the correct left-approved buzzwords and he was able to slip in Trump\u2019s policy harassed.\n<\/p>\n<p>The answer is probably a combination of both explanations.\n<\/p>\n<p>Either way, the fact is that sovereign nations control who enters their country. That should not be controversial whether Trump or Biden implements the policy. And the limitation of immigration was a leftist policy for decades \u2013 because limiting immigration protected the working-class workforce, which used to be the purview of the Democrats.<\/p>\n<p>While I\u2019ve used this article to focus on criticizing the discrepant responses to the same policy across two administrations, I do want to emphasize that America should work to retain its reputation as a safe haven for those fleeing persecution.\n<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s one thing to limit immigration generally. It\u2019s another thing to limit immigration for fear of spreading a novel virus.
