(See: Bernie Madoff.) But in FTX founder Sam Bankman-Fried\u2019s case, you get kid gloves. <\/p>\n<p>It was obvious corporate media decided to treat SBF differently from the start. When FTX first crumbled, the New York Times <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2022\/11\/14\/technology\/ftx-sam-bankman-fried-crypto-bankruptcy.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">characterized<\/a> SBF\u2019s fall from grace as pure <a href=\"https:\/\/www.coindesk.com\/layer2\/2022\/11\/30\/ftxs-collapse-was-a-crime-not-an-accident\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">mismanagement<\/a>. SBF was described as a \u201ccharitable entrepreneur,\u201d while the words \u201cfraud,\u201d \u201ccrime,\u201d or \u201cstolen,\u201d do not appear anywhere in the article.<\/p>\n<p>Then, in a live Wednesday tele-interview with New York Times columnist Andrew Ross Sorkin, SBF was thrown softballs and treated to <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/KeenanPeachy\/status\/1598133954993074177\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">a round of applause<\/a>. His bio in the event program read \u201c29-year old American investor, entrepreneur and philanthropist,\u201d with no mention of the fact that $8 billion dollars of other people\u2019s money seemingly <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2022\/11\/30\/business\/sam-bankman-fried-ftx-collapse.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">vanished<\/a> on his watch. <\/p>\n<p>George Stephanopoulos\u2019 \u201cexclusive\u201d one-on-one \u201dGood Morning America\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/GMA\/status\/1598089660172890113\">interview<\/a> with SBF felt like nothing more than a slap on the wrist, even as the embattled CEO <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/TheAbridgedZach\/status\/1598684178991546368\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">struggled<\/a> with how to answer the question of whether or not he stole FTX\u2019s customer deposits. (The answer is <em>yes.<\/em>) <\/p>\n<p>SBF <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2022\/12\/01\/media-treats-fraudster-sam-bankman-fried-with-kid-gloves-because-he-was-a-dem-darling\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">being treated with kid gloves<\/a> by corporate media outlets\u2014and <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/RepMaxineWaters\/status\/1598693811252875264\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">House Democrats<\/a>\u2014shouldn\u2019t surprise anyone: The cryptocurrency exchange CEO was the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/articles\/the-crypto-politics-of-sam-bankman-fried-ftx-cryptocurrency-crash-democrats-11668551213\">second largest individual donor to the Democratic Party <\/a>during the 2022 midterms. <\/p>\n<p>SBF\u2019s mother, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.influencewatch.org\/person\/barbara-fried\/\">Barbara Fried<\/a>, is a Stanford professor and Democratic Party activist focused on funneling millions of dollars into the party\u2019s get-out-the-vote campaigns through her leftist super PAC, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.influencewatch.org\/political-party\/mind-the-gap\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Mind the Gap<\/a>. SBF\u2019s former FTX employee, Nishad Singh, was Mind the Gap\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.opensecrets.org\/political-action-committees-pacs\/mind-the-gap\/C00683649\/donors\/2022?page_length=25&#038;start=1\">top donor<\/a> for the 2022 election cycle. And SBF\u2019s brother, Gabe Bankman-Fried, is also <a href=\"https:\/\/www.yahoo.com\/now\/brothers-behind-democrats-crypto-pac-204346143.html?guccounter=1&#038;guce_referrer=aHR0cHM6Ly93d3cuZ29vZ2xlLmNvbS8&#038;guce_referrer_sig=AQAAANvdx5O-UqwYHBvBrqHw_wyukoI5TElzLJeIbmazAVRsQllkZEUds89QRGd-HILQjhKzuHphlw2vlqi29mBm9guv1Sp-HGo-FgfvvgBUsrFMlD3bxN9d75zZ2TMBfu1eFBYEzhTYTefH3AjjDLVr1npLPva6xr8vCFaH8HRmUEsq\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">heavily involved<\/a> in the (also leftist) political nonprofit world (funded by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.businessinsider.in\/investment\/news\/photos-inside-the-3-million-dc-townhouse-where-ftx-founder-sam-bankman-friedaposs-brother-hosted-parties-for-his-covid-19-nonprofit\/slidelist\/95811043.cms#slideid=95811081\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">FTX cash<\/a>). <\/p>\n<p>Simply put: The Bankman-Fried\u2019s are heavily connected in Democratic politics, including the press, and such connections come with strings attached when donations are involved. There\u2019s no way Democrats will let one of their biggest donors\u2014or the son of one of their biggest party apparatchik\u2019s\u2014be thrown in jail, even when all <a href=\"https:\/\/www.coindesk.com\/layer2\/2022\/11\/30\/ftxs-collapse-was-a-crime-not-an-accident\/\">evidence<\/a> suggests he should be.<\/p>\n<p> Victoria Marshall is a staff writer at The Federalist.
